Default V70 transmission issues hard up and down shifts

04 V70 non-turbo. After about 30 minutes, the car shifts pretty hard between 1 and 2 and 2 and 3 and when slowing to a stop bumps rather hard while going into 1. I just had the local dealer scan if for a possible transmission software update. They said it was up to date and is most likely a valve body. Rather than dump a ton of $$$ into it with a used or new transmission, I changed the servo cover and it almost seem to make it worse. So, I had the transmission flushed (Mobile 3309) with 18 quarts and added Lubegard 63010 at the end. Mechanic said there were no metal flakes in the old fluid, but it was definitely old and according to him, thick. I haven't driven it more than 10 miles but my mechanic said it's still acting the same once the car has been driven for a while. I'll be driving it a good deal tomorrow so we will see how things go. Should I bother taking it to the dealer to do the adaptive reset and reset the fluid counter, or while I be wasting my money? My mechanic seemed to think a software issue could not cause the current mess.

Typically the shift solenoids are all that is required. See my sticky.

Is there any chance that an adaptation (and reset of fluid counter) done by someone who really know how to do it would straighten out the operation of the transmission?

My 2004 V70 has a 55-51SN according to the tag on the top of the transmission. Reading online the 51 is used in the AWD V70, but mine is definitely FWD and the tag definitely says 51 (not 50). What does the transmission tag on the OP's vehicle state?

I had the transmission fluid changed at the dealer about 5 years ago because of a flare on upshift while on a long trip. It has worked properly since. Mine has been in service for 11 years (I got it new in Sept 2003), but it has only 59,000 miles on the odo.

You can run 50 barrels of Mobile fluid through that transmission and it will not change. I would recommend changing the shift solenoids as discussed.

However, please do as you wish.

I had a transmission power flushed, with some hesitation, after which I took it to the dealer to have them complete the proper adaptive reset. The car drives remarkably better, however, it is still having a few hard shifts here and there, sometimes even longer than prior to the flush.

Tony1963, I looked for your sticky that you mentioned but didn't have much luck finding it. Any chance you can post a link to it here?

You spent more time flushing the transmission and doing the adaptive reset than following my advice. Oh well, I tried.

Hope you enjoyed spending money, or should I say wasting money.

I found a used transmission. I may just go that route & replace with one that has a warranty. Changing out the solenoids seems like pretty hefty job.

How many miles on the 2004 V70 with this transmission problem? Is the transmission of your other 2004 V70 OK? Is there a lot of difference in the miles driven or the way these two are driven that would account for the transmission in one developing a problem and the other not? Are these geartronic or base? Are these 55-50 or 55-51?

Its from a 2003. Supposed to be a direct match. I guess I'll have to verify numbers. It's got about 70k less miles.

You are willing to install a used transmission (height of gambling) rather than change the shift solenoids?

Enjoy the time that you are wasting. You could have done two solenoid jobs with the time that you have spent on this board.

I'm agreeing with Tony on this... changing the shift solenoids will be MUCH easier and cheaper than swapping a tranny, which is (as Tony points out) pretty risky. Since there didn't seem to be any metal in the fluid during the original fluid change, I'm betting (your money!) that the shift solenoids will fix the problem. But I'd also strongly suggest at least considering doing a reset and adaptation drive... doesn't cost much (or anything if you have the tool) and might fix the problem without getting your hands greasy.
