View Full Version : Painted My 850 Grill
agentdoubleowen 07-16-2007, 02:26 PM I painted my 850R Grill Black.
I like the looks of the Mesh Grills on the market but I wanted something that looked a little more like it came from the factory.
I usedJohn Deere Tractor Paint(Black With a Medium Sheen). It is a very Durable Paint and I am hoping it will withstand rock better than Krylon.
I prepped the Surface with a Scotch Brite Pad so hopefully it wont flake off.[8D]
Let me know what you think.

S70driver 07-16-2007, 03:30 PM It looks good.
I would like to see how the paint holds up as well. Did you take off all the chrome? Or just scratch it up so the paint had something to stick to?
If it does come all off use Plastidip next time. A lot of people have used this with great results.
agentdoubleowen 07-16-2007, 04:43 PM I did not take all the Chrome off. I used the Scotch Brite pad and really worked the surface. and Sprayedthe whole thing down with starter fluid (That's allI could find in the Garage). I had a friend paint his Jeep in the John Deere Green paint and that paint took a lot of abuse and still looked great.
I will update this post in a few months. (hopefully without any chipped off paint)
I painted mine black and left the outside edge crome I loved how it came out.

Tech,
We are thinking about painting the grille of my sons 850 black, since the rub strips and bumpers look so good in the black. I've heard of using tractor paint & plastidip. What did you use to paint yours and how is it holding up?

Use Plastidip in the spray can. You wont be disappointed.
Yes use the plastidip. I haven't tried that stuff yet.
I used the stuff I posted in your Bumper thread. It has chipped quite a bit.
The grill on the R I believe was plastidiped before it was given to me.There is one piece that peeled a little bit.
I would think that would be from not preping really good.
Thanks guys. By the way, where do you get plastidip?
I believe you can buy it at the Auto Parts store.
OK, there is an Autozone and Advance auto within walking distance of my house. If we do it I'll post some pics.
S70driver 08-21-2007, 11:10 AM If not the auto parts store, LOWES, Home Depot might have it.
Auto parts stores didn't have the Plastidip. Found a Krylon paint that is formulated and is supposed to bond to plastic. Taped off the outer edge, the badge and the diagonal piece and painted the rest of it black. Looks awesome. I'll try to get some pics posted in the next few days. The black trim and the black grille with the black paint really changes the entire look of the car. Window tints are next.
S70driver 08-26-2007, 10:35 PM Told you to try LOWES and or Home Depot.

thomatt12 03-14-2008, 08:01 PM I painted my grille with flat black/ matte black paint and I really like the result! It looks really cool! I bought the spray paint from a nearby auto parts (http://www.carpartswholesale.com) store, I think the brand was RJ. My car is not a volvo though. Just want to share.
zx12rider 03-15-2008, 08:58 AM Mine's holding up pretty good. Sanded it down, primed it, then sprated it matte black with a krylon int/ext spray. It's been holding up good so far.
