Default To modify B5254FS on 850 GLT

I have recently bought 850 GLT 1992 (Nov 1992), made in Belgium. Automatic.
As somethimg is wrong with engine, (I am not sure yet what is wrong and how much work/$ will I need to fix it) I started considering, as one of options what to do with this engine, to give it overhaul and serious modification in the same time. I mean to make it turbo. As this is my new Volvo, I don't know if that is possible - economically reasonable or maybe just stupid pipe dream...
It would be great to make it 240-300 hp engine, but I have to do it by myself and I can't spend a fortune.
BTW: is that possible to carry engine overhaul on this car, without removing the engine ? - this is critically important for me.

From what I've read on this forum, converting from N/A to turbo is too expensive. It would be cheaper to sell the GLT and get a Turbo/T5.

Yes you can convert your N/A to turbo. It is possible.

However it will take a while especially in the tuning department and will cost more then the car is worth.

I have just found out that the only problem with my engine is (probably) blocked hudraulic tappet. My plan is to fix that but I am still interested to buy another B5254 (I can get one pretty cheap) and to modify it with turbo to build 200-300Hp engine. I would do as much as possible by myself. Does anybody know any www with detailed info how to carry that kind of modification ? What needs to be done, what do I need to buy and so on...

What you don't understand is that it is going to cost you a lot of money and a lot of time to get it up and running properly.

Tuning is key and it is not just going to be as easy as an ECU upgrade. Your going to have to dyno tune it to get it right.

To do it right your looking at a good...

- $1000 for just the turbo. Maybe a little less maybe a little more depending on what you go with.

- $300-$1000 possibly $1200 for the downpipe depending on if you go custom or premade.

- $300-$1000 for the catback depending on if you go custom or premade.

Of course for the downpipe and catback your going to want mandrel bends. Otherwise it wont be worth it.

- Tuning, this is going to cost the most and take the longest. I am guessing your going to spend a good $1000+ on this.

Just an idea of what your getting into...

-Downpipe
-Catback
-Intercooler
-Intercooler hardpipes
-Turbo hoses
-Vaccum lines
-Oil or water lines
-Turbocharger
-T-bolt clamps
-Etc...

Don't forget the tuning.

Would it not be less expensive to find a used turbo engine andfita larger turbo, replace pcv piping and anything else that needs to be done while the engine is out?

I mean I am all for more power, but by the sounds of the impending cost, you could get a new turbo engine for about the same cost, less stress, and almost a plug and play scenario [sm=smiley20.gif].

I inderstand that the whole idea is to save money but horse power does not come cheap. You need to figure out what your threshold ($/hp) level and know when to say, OK - Enough.

Thanks for useful info and comments ! Sure $ is important, sure I prefer to build this engine cheaper than dearer. But, on the other side, I would love to put my hands on it, just to have fun, challenge, satisfaction...
But I will keep some opinions above in my mind and who knows - if I find some good turbo engine, maybe...thanks response !
