Hello,

I have a 2000 c70 convertible and need to know how to get to the rear shocks. I pulled apart the trunk, but the shocks look like they mount closer to underneath the rear seat. Can anyone tell me the best way to get to them????

I forget if you have to remove the rear seat or not.

It has been a long while since I had a rear seat out of a C70.

I thought you could access from the trunk.

Tech,

I'll look in the trunk again to make sure, but they line up with the rear seat back. I tried to remove the seats to take a look, but could'nt get them out. I didn't want to break anything. I figured I'd ask before I went yanking on the seats. I'll have to gently figure out how to get the seat out........

If I remember correctly there is 2 buttons you will have to push in the front of the seat bottom to get it to release.
Then you will have to reach up under the rear seat back and press some tabs to release the headrests(You will need someone to help you remove them) Then you will have to slide the seat from the seatbelts.

Tech,

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I will let you know how it turns out.....

Are you positive that you need a shock replacement on a 2000 Volvo???

Tech & Reg,

I replaced all struts and shocks today. The mounts for the rear shocks were behind the rear seat, as previously thought.
The shocks were shot. I could compress them and they did not extend once released. The ride is "Like New"..... The struts were probably O.K., but I replaced them since I purchased everything in a package deal. Thanks for the help.....

I have a new set of rear shocks sitting in my trunk because I could not figure out how to remove the rear seat...and 2 shops refused to do this work. How does the rear seat come loose?

I pulled the back seat out, but could not find the top nut of the rear shock.
What am I doing wrong?

I got the bottom of the rear seat out using a interior 2 blade screw driver, left over from my other Volvos.
Stick the interior screw driver type device under the bottom front of the rear seat and it lifts out, then pull out the bottom of the rear seat forward, remove from the car.
Then lower left and right side of the back of the rear seat are two 14mm nuts, unscrew one on each side.
That's as far as I got, because I still could not see the top nut of the rear shock absorbers. So I put it back together.

I did my 2003 C70 convertible two weeks ago. Pull up on the rear seat corners, there are no bolts holding the bottom of the seat. THERE ARE 2 bolts that hold the back seat down, one in each corner. Swing the seat all the way up, there are some clips at the top, push the seat back and the rear seat can be remove. There are clips inside the back seat holding the headrest, reach inside of back seat, push and pull headrest at the same time and remove before trying to remove seat.
There are holes covered by foam, 2 large, 2 small. remove foam and there are the tops of the shocks.
I have 25 years of Aircraft (air force, boeing) and have never seen any designed so poorly. It took me 4 hours just to figure out how/what tools to get the darn nuts off. If your vice grips are worn go get a small new one. that was the only tool I could find to fit and get a wrench in the small space.
OR I REPEAT OR .... with the car on jacks, and a block of wood, pillows and blankets you can loosen the nut with the spring tension on the shock and the nut should have enough tension nut to let the shock shaft spin.
This is not SAFE ,,,, but it worked for me. DO NIT TRY THIS WHEN INSTALLING THE SHOCKS !!
INSTALLING...... after the shock is installed I put some large washers on the top mount bolts so the locking nut did not have so many threads to tighten.... BUT.... make sure you do have enough for the locking nut to tighten... OR YOU WILL BE BACK TRYING TO TIGHTEN THAT NUT.
Replacing the foam.... I went to Low's and found some air conditioner wrap the is sticky on one side and recovered the holes.
I am not sorry for all spelling erors or missing words.... I am only on my 6th cup of coffee and it;s 6 in the mornig///////////
Need any help.... please contact me ?

Thanks CB1313,

I also called my Volvo dealer, who advised to remove the rear speakers behind the back to the back seat to access the top of the rear shocks.
