View Full Version : Engine questions
pilotsims 04-12-2004, 07:09 PM hey everyone! if any of you have any questions about engines, drivetrains and related stuff, feel free to ask me. i am pretty good with these topics especially when it comes to the 200 series since i own one. so feel free to ask away.
aibias 06-15-2004, 03:43 AM Okay here is a question for you. Are there any other engines that will fit in a 1979 Bertone 262? thanks<IMG src=smileys/smiley17.gif border="0">
pilotsims 07-31-2004, 06:58 PM my best guess would be almost ne engine you want. most volvos have big engine bays. for example, i have a 1991 240. my b230f 4 cylinder fits in with room to spare. i have even seen a book that is specific to the 240 model that tells how to convert the car to a chevy v8. thats how much space there is. i am not very familiar with the 260 series. what little i know is that they were manufactured for a short time with the 240 series. for this reason, id guess you have room for expansion in there. hope this answers your question. if i ever find out more i can let you know...mike
chs68 08-09-2004, 11:37 PM i have a stupid question but do u kno the engine code for a s60 2002 2.4 liter turbo volvo.
thanks
You can find your engine code on either the emission sticker under the hood of your car or on the outside of the front of the timing cover.
ajwgtor 03-10-2005, 05:06 PM Tell me about the following: Variable Valve Timing Hub on a 2000 S40 engine. Is it a part that must be replaced or can one clean it?
Why do you ask something wrong with yours?
Just out of curosity, what is the newest volvo engine I could put into a 78 262c?. At the present I have a B280 sitting under the hood. Runs okay, but am looking for a new engine. Thanks.

How far do you want to go?
It will take a lot of money to install a newer motor in there. You will need the wiring harnesses, computers,Transmission,Mounts,ETC
I guess I am dreaming. I would like to put another B280 in there. Are there any really good shops out there who have fully rebuilt B280 engines. A link would be nice. Thanks.
Maybe someone else will know where to find it.
If all else fails drop a chevy 350 with a Carb in there.
S70turbo1999 07-04-2005, 04:26 PM okay i cant seem to find my engine number, even after scanning through my engine for maybe half an hour. I checked the manual and they gave me four options and i have narrowed it down to 2 based the output i feel my car gives. does anyone know if a 1999 s70 GLT have a B5234 T3 or B5234T8? i know both of these are 2.3 liters and thats all i need because im going to get both intake and air filter from K&N :D but i wuld like to actually know what is in my engine besides the DOHC/5 inline/turbo part.
There should be a white sticker on the hood that tells you.
Also What are the 6 and 7th numbers of your Vin#?
S70turbo1999 07-06-2005, 12:46 AM well the white sticker has been covered like 2 or3 times by a blank white sticker so i would hafta talk to the people that do check ups on my car. as for the 6th and 7th number they are 5 and 6
I believe the 56 is the 5234 T3
My cheater book misses a couple of years.
knight rider 07-06-2005, 03:24 PM I saw a 240 dl wagon that had a mustang cobra motor in it. Supposedly there is a kit for that. It was sweet. looked completely stock from the outside, and rumbled like hell when he fired it up. The guys at my local NAPA tell me an older man is driving a 740 wagon that has an LT1. The older man asked the guy at NAPA to look at someting in the bay and didn't even know that was in there. He said " I thought it was quite fast for a volvo". Man I want that car. How do you not notice that there is an LT1 under the hood. I have still yet to see it.
S70turbo1999 07-07-2005, 12:12 AM okay thanks tech

ceja170 12-13-2005, 12:10 AM i have a question about my volvo 88 740 turbo every time i want to pass someone up and i step on the gas it seems that the engine kicksdown and doesnt want to do anything else i give it more gas and still nothing they told me it was cause of the turbo that it did that...if it is...is there a solution to that?
[quote]ORIGINAL: pilotsims
Check the turbo and see if it is seized.
ceja170 12-15-2005, 03:53 AM the turbo is fine and all..some guy who had a newer volvo way newer told me that his did that too..
chocoisa 03-30-2006, 07:54 PM tech, what do you mean by seized?
Remove the hose to the turbo and try to spin the turbo.
If it spins good then it is fine. If it won't move then it is seized.

The service light or Check Engine light????
mikec 04-30-2006, 09:14 AM Alright here's a tough one. I have a 1988 740 turbo, but recently I had to replace the engine. My mechanic replaced it with a non-turbo model. The engine runs pretty good except that he couldn't hook up the "check engine" light. It seems that there is a problem hooking up the on board computer. My local Volvo guy doesn't want to deal with it. He says that to fix it is going to cost a bundle. Any suggestions?
That sounds like a nightmare.
BUT
1.Why did you need a new motor?
2.If you install a Non-turbo motor without the computer then it will almost never run right.
3. Why didn't he install the Turbo head on the Non-turbo bock and install the motor as a turbo?
4. Or even the worse you could have installed the Turbo cam in the Non-turbo head and stil run it as a turbo.
mikec 05-03-2006, 06:51 PM The old motor had two dead cylinders. The mechanic said he thought the turbo was part of the problem. I'm thinkin' he just didn't want to deal with installing the new one.
I doubt it.
He had more trouble converting it to Non-turbo than he would have had just putting in a turbo motor.
86volvo240SL 06-30-2006, 01:55 PM I have a 86 Volvo 240 SL. I was wondering what is the purpose of the hose running fron the bottom of the intake box the the exhaust manifold?
It is called a Heat Rise tube.
It is used in the Winter in Cold Climates to Transfer heat into the air box for the engnie to warm up faster.
If you live in a warm climate then there is no need for it.

I have a D24 TIC motor, and wondering on what things I can do to get more power from it. I have changed the diesel pump from 2,4l to 5,9l, and having 3-4 bar on the turbo. What more can I do?
