That might be the nature of the beast.

What kind of service work has been done and how many miles?

Ok I just wanted to make sure the car didn't have alot of miles on it.

I think it is just the nature of the beast.

I have the same car, same year, & same problem, A humming/whinning sound when cold on start up for maybe 10-60 seconds under load or when reving. no noise when warm. The noise appears to be from around the timing cover area or belts I thinking Power steering pump? Whirling sound i get sounds like a noisy ford power steering pump?. However I can't be 100% sure I'm Also open for ideas. Also have a question about my 98 v70 xc awd. Does any one who drives a v70 turbo know if the turbo is quiet ? I don't hear it spooling up or whinning under accel or load. It dosnt feel like a turbo car? is this a normal for the v70 turbo
Thanks Greg q

Pull the timing cover and inspect the timing belt idler pulley and tensioner pulley. If you see any grease at all on the pulley or seal then you need to have it replaced.

How many miles are on the car?
