Howdy Everyone,
I ended up posting this twice(sorry new to this forum). My wife and I are looking at a 1989 Volvo 760Turbo for 3500.00. It has a Volvo reman engine with 50K miles on it, we were told it cost 5K to replace. The total miles on the vheicle 260K. The fellow who has it has maintenace records from the beginning. It is in good condition. My questions are:
How long is the actual tubro good for? What do they cost to replace? How reliable are Volvo transmissions. This one still has the original transmission on it. What are specific things I should look for and ask regarding this type of Volvo?
Being aware of the risk associated with high mileage, is 260K high for a Volvo and is the price to high? I ask this in relationship to a Toyota or Honda having in excess of 150-200K miles on it (did that make sense?). Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.
Take care and have a good day,
Craig

Make sure the engine is in good order and that the maintence records are actually real and signify all that has been done to the car. In my opinion, 1989 is a bit too old. The turbos last for some time. Also, make sure the timing belt was replaced sometime in the near past. Lastly, $3500 seems a bit too pricey for a car with 260K miles. I am sure for about $5-6K you could find a better deal. The KBB base retail for a '91 model is approx $5,000. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Fire. I was having a hard time getting over the 260K miles and still wanting 3800.00, new engine or not. We will probably keep looking.

Good decision. I'm sure thats not the best (and only) deal around.

Hey Texan, I wanted to put in my 2 cents worth. I have owned many a Volvo but I never was fond of that 6 cyl. I had a 760 one time but it had a 4 cyl in it. Try looking at Autotrader.com for your area. I have bought quite a few cars on there. I always seek out one that is by an individual and preferably serviced by a MB dealership. The 4 cyl has been around for probably 40 years for Volvo. As long as you maintain it you'll get 3 or 4 hundred thousand miles out of it.

If it's a 760 Turbo Intercooler it has the 4 cylinder engine. Trust me I had one. Only Volvo I ever had that gave me trouble, mostly the A/C. Once I drove the 850 Turbo, the 760 was gone.
