Hi, I think one or both of my rear wheel bearings has seen better days, judging from the noise coming from the back end of my 204000 mile '97 V40. Does anyone have a suggestion of where I could replacement hubs from more cheaply than the main dealer. I understand the bearing itself is not a replaceable part?
Thanks for any help.

You're correct in that if the rear bearings need replacement then you need a new rear hub assembly plus a new hub nut and new brake caliper mounting bolts.

I'm in UK, so cannot advise on US parts sources I'm afraid.

Hi Black Beauty,
Thanks for the reply, actually I'm based in the UK too. When I joined the forum yesterday I made the mistake of thinking it was a UK based one. Given that I am in the UK have you a suggestion where to get cheap rear hubs from?
Thanks Cameron

Hi Black Beauty,
Well I tried europarts.com and they only seem to show rear wheel bearing kits. I thought that you had to replace the whole rear hub? I tried ringing them for advice, but they were useless.
Can anyone advise me?
Thanks Cameron

Surprised, they're normally pretty good.

Try http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/BosDirectory/index.php?cat_id=5 for links to various sites offering Volvo parts.

Thanks for the link to some UK parts suppliers.
Can anyone answer my question about whether the rear wheel bearings are easily replaceable?
Or do you definitely have to buy complete hubs?
I wasn't convinced that the guy at europarts knew what he was talking about - he said that the bearing was a replaceable part.

Common sense says that the bearings must have got into the hubs somehow, so why won't they come out again?

However, the process of getting them in would almost certainly involve the use of a factory press, maybe heat as well. Therefore getting them out would be very involved, if not impossible without damaging the hub. I have been told before that the hubs must be replaced & Volvo say this as well. I've just dug out my Haynes manual & that says replace hubs too.

An experienced mechanic might be able to do it with the right tools - Euro Car Parts supply to the trade as well as retail - are they able to give you any pointers? Caution - if the bearings have disintigrated then the hubs may be ruined anyway.

Anyone out there ever tried replacing rear hub bearings in the 40 series?

hi New to the forum!

Has anyone tried to source cheap rear hub with bearings in UK yet? The dealers are asking for stupid amounts, and i dont think i could afford that at present.
