I need help on this one. My Volvo V70R 99’ will start about 90% of the time. The other 10% it will start and immediately die. This may happen two or three times and then it will just turn over with out trying to start at all. Most of the time if I wait for 15-20 seconds it will start right up and off I go. If I give it gas while it’s dying it has no effect. If I give it gas when it is just turning over this has no effect. It has never died once it’s started and idles fine. At first I thought it could be low voltage. It was only supplying 12.1-12.3 volt to the battery. The alternator was putting out 13.4 (inside spec) so I replaced the cables. Now the battery gets 13.2 but the car still does it. It does not matter what temperature the car is or ambient is, or how long ago it was driven. Any help this would be appreciated.

 

Do you have an extra Key?

If so try using it and see if the same thing happens.

Sounds like something tied to the Immoblizer.

Thanks. I took your advice and the problem went away. Now its back with a vengence! both keys do it now about 50% of the time. Last time I wrote in it was rainy out side as well, maybe something. I need to look into the immobilizer circut more. Thanks for you help and setting me on the right path

The antenna ring(Light around lock cylinder) might be bad not picking up the signal.

 

How do you know all this stuff? I was reading some other posts just because and you came up all the time. Your frickin amazing!

I used to work at a Dealer and now work at an Indy shop on Volvo's.

I don't work in Indy I work at a Indipendant shop. It is in Florida.

 

I had exactly the same problem and the question of the immobilizer circuit was raised to. I just purchased my V70 and it would do exactly the same thing as yours. I did however have an extra key and remote that needed to be coded. The service techy said the problem may be solved with the re-coding. I'm happy to report it worked. I have not had a starting problem since. It's been a week now with no reoccurrences.
