I've been disappointed by the fact that generic service manuals are getting thinner and thinner lately. I have Haynes' 850 manual, and it's less than an inch (2.54cm) thick if you compress/squeeze it. At this point, I am thinking that factory manuals are the only ones that are useful.

I predict the next-generation manuals would be something like this:

Total pages: 20

Page-1: Photos of the car.
Page-2: Acknowledgments.
Page-3: Publisher's info.
Page-4: General Index:
Page-5: Driving Tips:
*Driving your Volvo should be entrusted to a Volvo dealer.

Page-6: Routine Maintenance:
Ex: Oil & Filter Change:
*Due to its complexity, oil & filter change should be entrusted to a Volvo dealer.

Page-7: Engine Overhaul:
*Don't you dare, this procedure is beyond home mechanics & professionals alike, entrust it to a Volvo dealer.

Page-8: Brakes:
*All brake system servicing should be entrusted to a Volvo dealer.

Page-9: Cleaning Your Volvo:
Cleaning your Volvo should be entrusted to a Volvo dealer, as Volvo Original Premium Car Wash & Wax Solution must strictly be used (don't even think Turtle Wax!!) to achieve maximum shine & weather protection.

Page-10: Contact information:
Contact information should be entrusted to a Volvo dealer.

Pages 11-20:
Blank pages for you to take notes.

BTW, I tried a xhilton's CD-ROM version of service manual for trucks at work (Fords). Even though the CD-ROM contains manuals for several models, it only allows you to access one model, and prevents the rest from being accessed (stingy).

Additionally, the manual is in PDF format, and it is VERY user-unfriendly. You also have to print out the pages if you need a hard copy (waste of ink cartridge). At the moment, I still prefer paper-based manuals, though they both have pro's & con's.

I also noticed that generic manuals often omit certain procedures (in case of Haynes' 850, it doesn't have a procedure for removing thedoor mirrors, not the entire unit but I needed to remove the mirror glass only).

I wonder if anyone has tried xhilton version of 850 manual....
