Default fuel pump issue or low fuel indicator light burned out

2000 Volvo V70 XC: Car stopped with about 1/8 fuel in tankand no low fuel indicator light showing.Mechanic said he tested fuel pump and no pressure. Installed new fuel pump and a day later car stopped again with 1/8 full tank. Fuel pump has pressure, no low fuel indicator light on and he just said to keep tank at least 1/4 filled. Could the indicator light be burned out and how to check? He mentioned that the fuel tanks expand and can cause problems, but saw tanks and didn't see any expansion. How easy to take panel apart to change light? How to empty tank and see if light comes on i.e. gas method to empty tank? Is the low fuel indicator mechanical or electrical in the fuel tank and how to check it?After $1100 to replace fuel pump that part costs over $650, I'm not sure what to decide to do. Car was taken to a dealership for diagnosic check with nothing showing that was wrong. Need suggestions. Thanks orcutd
