Default Volvo 940 '92 GL radiator fan

Hi all,

This is a weird one but firstly I'm going to put my hands up and say I know practically nothing about he following topic so go easy on me.

I bought my 940 with the idea to fix it up and sell it for more than I bought it in a few years time once I've moved on from Malaysia. One thing that baffles me about cars is the wiring. Whenever I try to learn anything about it, I get so confused and basically give up. Don't get me started on wiring diagrams..

I bought the car with a switch that manualy controls the fan. Basically, jump in the car, turn engine on, turn fan switch on and away I go. I have on occasion forgot to turn it on, only being made aware of this error when things start getting hot and smelling. Or forget to turn it off, leaving a dead or close to dead battery the next time I start it up.

Why do you reckon this has been rigged like this? What's broken? Living in Malaysia, generic electrical parts tend to be quite cheap, but I don't even know where to start.

Anyone got any ideas?

the radiator fan is triggered by a temperature sensor which then feeds a relay to trigger the fan. So to figure it all out, I'd start by checking all the fuses are good, then see if you are getting control voltage to the relay (should be up on the radiator cowling), then test the relay itself. If you are not getting control voltage, you can test the temperature sensor by measuring resistance - typically they are low when cold (ie under 300 ohms) and high when warm (over 2000 ohms).
