Default Worth the risk if the car is free?

There is a 1996 volvo 850 turbo for sale. It has around 250,000km on it. Car does not run, "supposedly" its just the fuel pump. I have the oppurtunity to acquire this vehicle at no expense to myself. its free to me , but is not exactly free (lets just call it a gift). Is it worth the risk given that im getting it for free. cant really take it to a mechanic before i buy it as its not plated or insured, and would probably cost like 100 bucks for a tow. Even if i could, would i even be able to tell if something major like the clutch or tranny is out without the vehicle being able to start.

i intend to do all the repairs myself to keep the price down. So what ya think, take the risk on a "free" car that might just need a $200-300 fix? if its more i can either scrap or part it out.
