Default 1998 Volvo S70 Non-turbo Manual - $2500 obo (Pittsburgh, PA)

For sale is a navy blue 1998 Volvo s70 (non-turbo) with a manual transmission (rare for Volvo's) and with a little less than 147,000 miles. This car comes equipped with heated seats, ABS, AC (blows cold with no problems), power windows, power locks, cruise control, power steering, AM/FM radio, cassette player, CD player, cloth seats, and steel wheels.

History of the car: My dad purchased this car new in 1997. The car spent the next 14 years in a western suburb of Cleveland, OH where it was used mainly by my dad to drive to and from work (15 mile round trip) with the occasional long distance trip to upstate New York. He took very good care of this car and kept a complete maintenance record of the work that was done. Oil and filter changes were performed regularly at 3k mile intervals. In November 2011, I was given the car with about 119,000 miles. I mainly used it to commute to work from the Southside of Pittsburgh to Cranberry Twp, PA (50 mile round trip). I regularly changed the oil and filter at 3k mile intervals, with the occasional 4k and 4.5k interval change. Lastly, I’ve been driving a manual transmission car for the past 10 years so I know how to properly drive it.

Recent Major Maintenance:

• 141,078 mi: Replace Timing belt, rollers and tensioner, water pump, coolant, serpentine belt, and left & right axle assembly. The work was performed by Anderson Auto (Jim Anderson Auto Repair - Pittsburgh Volvo Repair Specialists - Shadyside Oakland Squirrel Hill East Liberty Bloomfield) for $1365
• 13X,XXX mi: Replaced upper and lower radiator hoses (preventative maintenance, hoses looked old). Replaced filter (part #9186744) and purge valve (Bosch #0280142300) of the secondary air system (emissions related). Replaced all vacuum hoses with silicone hoses (no more stupid vacuum elbows to worry about!)
• 130,000-ish mi: Replaced ABS control module with refurbished unit from Midwest ABS
• 128,447 mi: Replaced entire PCV system (oil trap, hoses, intake elbow hose, intake gasket), both front lower control arms, both front seat springs, both front brake hoses. Work performed by Bobby Rahal Volvo (New and Used Volvo in the Pittsburgh & Greensburg Area | Bobby Rahal Volvo) for $2363
• 125,554 mi: Changed transmission gear oil with Volvo OEM 75w-80 oil (part #1161745)
• Replaced both air pump hoses (part # 1271767-4 and 1271766-6). Cleaned MAF, idle air control valve (IAC), and throttle body
• 121090 mi: Replaced Inlet and outlet IAC hoses
• 114484 mi: Replaced both rear brake pads, rotors, calipers, e-brake shoes (with hardware). Replaced air pump. Work performed by Galati’s Auto (full service foreign and domestic car repair center)
• 109,286 mi: Replaced power steering (PS) rack and pinion gear, PS pump, PS high pressure & return hoses, PS fluid. Brand new front suspension. Work performed by Galati’s Auto
• 98,528 mi: Replaced Catalytic Converter. Replaced entire exhaust system (exhaust pipe, gaskets, brackets, clamps, studs, and end pipe)
• 91,744 mi: Replaced clutch, pressure plate, clutch bearing assembly. Grinded/machined flywheel

As you can see, most of the major maintenance has been performed: timing belt & water pump, air pump emission system and hoses, ABS module, PCV system, transmission oil, steering system, exhaust system, and clutch. Additionally, all old rubber hoses have been replaced. All other maintained performed on this car can be seen in the maintenance log .

Things wrong with the car:

• The front suspension started clunking a few weeks ago. I suspect the seat springs have gone bad, but it could be something else.
• Front passenger wheel started making a noise. I suspect the wheel bearing needs to be replaced
• E-brake cable needs to be adjusted.
• Tires have about one season left on them. They are good for now, but will need to be replaced in the near future.
• The base of 1 of the 2 cup holders is broken
• Small stain (from tea) on the front passenger seat. The tea stain is about the same color as the cloth seat, so it is not that noticeable.

Note that I have not had a professional look at these problems. All my diagnostic guesses are based on my experience and based on postings from various Volvo forums.

Why I’m selling the car:

• The purpose of this car was to hold me over until I found my own car. I just purchased a car so I no longer need this one.

Why you should buy this car:

• Complete history of maintenance performed. I have a large folder with all the records to verify the work performed.
• All major maintenance items have been performed
• Clutch works flawlessly. Note that the original clutch was replaced at 91.7k miles and consisted of mainly suburb driving. From 119k to 147k, it’s been mainly highway driving. There is plenty of life left in the clutch.
• Gears shift very smoothly (tranny oil replaced at 125.5k miles)
• One of the last Volvo models to be built before Volvo was sold to Ford, which means this thing will last forever
• I have owned this car for 2 years and it has never left me stranded on the road. This thing is a tank (figuratively)
• Heated seats!
• AC works flawlessly
• Engine barely burns any oil, about ½ a quart every oil change. Oil comes out a dark brown color (not black!) during the oil changes, signifying that the engine has plenty of life left.

Based on all the money that I’ve recently put into this car and based on the issues with the front suspension and front passenger wheel, I’m selling this car for $2500 obo, AS IS. If you’re interested, reply to this posting or call/text me at 4four0 7seven3 one4seven4. Make me an offer, and we’ll see if we can come to an agreement. The car is currently located in the Southside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA (zip code 15203).

The last thing to note is the title is still in my Dad’s name and is currently located and titled in the state of OH. Once a selling price has been agreed upon, I’ll have him mail the title (notarized) and you can double check that everything is correct before the payment is made.
