Default 1997 Volvo 850 GLT

Location: Dahlonega, GA

For the '97 model year, the GLT came equipped with a low pressure turbo giving the 2.4L 5 cylinder engine 190hp and 199ftlbs of torque.

It might look boxy, but these Volvos are built like tanks and have a lot of character. This twenty year old Volvo rides smoother, accelerates faster, and offers more luxury than you will receive from many of the Kias and Hyundias built in the last few years. Not to mention the Swedish reliability and ice cold AC. You still frequently see old Volvos on the road; the same cannot be said for most other brands.

210,xxx miles
No accidents
No performance modifications
Two keys
Body and paint are in good condition with only minor dings, scratches, and sections of sun fade. Nothing unexpected for a car of this mileage.
Interior is also in good condition with only minor carpet staining and a few areas where plastic and vinyl pieces have been aged, cracked, or chipped by time and sun exposure.

We are the third owner of this car, purchased at 181,000 miles, and have been driving it daily since 2013. Sadly selling it because we do not need three cars.
The previous owner claims to have had the timing belt replaced around 160,000 miles.

  • Brake pads replaced at 196,000 miles
  • Transmission torque mount replaced at 197,000 miles
  • Volvo S70 wiper arms swapped at 200,000 miles (common problem with original 850 wiper arms not sitting flush against the windshield)
  • Upper engine mount replaced at 201,000 miles
  • Front right engine mount replace at 202,000 miles
  • Faulty SAS pump deleted at 202,000 miles (common problem for '90s Volvos)
  • Idle control valve hose replaced at 203,000 miles

  • ABS module replaced at 205,000 miles
  • Inner tie rods replaced at 209,000 miles
  • Throttle body / Intercooler hose replaced at 210,000 miles
Oil and filter changed every 5,000 miles or 12 months with Mobile 1 5W30 full synthetic. Last changed on October 22, 2016 at 208,788 miles.

The car has recently been aligned but does pull slightly to the right. Alignment shop claims this is possibly due to tires. It remains perfectly fine to drive, no wobbles, and feels solid even at 80mph.

Known problems:
  1. There is a random coolant leak supposedly from the thermostat housing gasket which occurs every 2-10 weeks. It is not dependent upon running temperature, air temperature, car running time, etc. When the problem occurs, it will leak a few ounces of coolant on the ground after shutting the car off.
  2. Timing belt is nearly 10 years old and will be due for replacement.
  3. Front CV axle boots have small cracks due to age, however, there is still sufficient grease around the joints and they are not compromised. No clicking or vibrations from these axles.
  4. I replaced the main engine mounts, but there is still a bit of vibration when idling in gear.
  5. FM/AM radio works intermittently. A common problem with '90s Volvos. CD and cassette still work flawlessly.
  6. Driver's door bump stop is worn and allows the door to swing freely on the hinge. Another common problem with '90s Volvos.
As of January 3, 2017, the car was driven and thoroughly inspected by Atlanta Volvo A Service & Repair. They informed me the coolant leak is the thermostat gasket. The following are items that they found wrong which I will slowly start replacing if this car does not sell soon:
  • Front cam seals minor leak
  • Oil cooler lines minor leak
  • Fuel filter due for replacement
  • End links should be replaced soon
By used car standards, this car is in really good shape. But considering that this is a 20 year old car with high mileage, it is in great condition.
Recently appraised by CarMax, they gave this 850 a top rating in all categories and found no flaws based on their inspection standards.

Kelly Blue Book values this car at $1900 in "fair condition" and $2700 in "very good condition."
We are only asking $1800.

Please call/text or private message me with any questions or picture requests regarding this car.
