Default 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon Parts Compatibility

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this forum, but a long-time Volvo enthusiast. I'm a novice when it comes to mechanical issues, but I'm working at it, and I just purchased my sixth used Volvo (2001 XC70).

Anyway, I'm debating whether to sell my 220K-miles 850 Turbo wagon as a parts car (versus fixing a few items and keeping it or selling it).

Question: I need a new exhaust and a new turbo and have located a 1995 850 Turbo wagon that the seller says has good parts. Can anyone out there tell me definitively whether the exhaust and/or turbo are the same between a 1995 and a 1996 Volvo 850 Wagon? It will be a long drive to go get the parts car, so would like to know before I make the trip.

Thanks!
Kazzlo

Yes..

However, unless you live somewhere that never rains, chances are your not going to be able to get the exhaust out in one piece to swap over. Things may be a little rusted up.

All I really need is the muffler, but am hoping to grab everything.

As for the turbo, you're sure about this? I had previously called my local Volvo dealership and the parts department told me the 1995 and 1996 turbos would not be compatible, but I was skeptical. They were definitely different part numbers, but I've been hoping that they're interchangeable. If you're confident about this, then I'll make the trip (thanks).

Hopefully I'll be able to get the bolts out without breaking them when I go to remove the turbo..

Thanks!!

Every single 850 Turbo uses the same 15G turbo. In 96/97 the GLTs had 13G turbos. The only difference is on the 96 turbo there will be a straight housing, and on the 95 turbo will be a conical housing, you'll just have to pull your housing off of the old turbo to swap onto the 95 turbo.

I agree. Be very careful removing the CAT to muffler clamp and removing the muffler. My pipe broke off just aft of the CAT because, if I remember correctly, there was a weld the rusted though. I had to weld in a patch that has been there for about 4 years. The aft O2 sensor would "not" ,even with heat, come out of the pipe.
