1986 244 Windshield Wiper Motor
Not sure what to check, occasionally the wiper works, and if it gets stuck in an up position, I have to tap the wiper control to get it all the way down again. The intermittent feature doesn't work, it's just one speed. Can anybody tell me what the repair might be?

check the voltages at the wires to the wiper motor, which is plainly visible on the passenger side of the firewall in the engine compartment.
240 wiper motors are easy to change, remove the glovebox and passenger side kick panel for easy access, unclip the wiper arms from the motor crank shaft, then the motor comes off on the engine compartment side... apply a health amount of 'butyl tape' (thats black gooey stuff) around hte new motor shaft where it goes through the hole int he firewall, bolt the motor down, hook the arms back up to the crankshaft behind the glovebox, plug the motor in, and go...
but yeah, if jiggling the switch makes it work, its probably a switch problem. tired motor syndrome is usually exhibited as slow draggy wipers, and/or wipers that won't return all the way home when switched off.

The trouble is in the parking contacts or the ground path for the parking contacts in the gear case of the wiper motor. Yes, replacement of the motor will eliminate the problem, but you may not need the expense of a new motor if you can remove the cover plate and clean the contacts, and check the ground at the upper mounting screw for the wiper motor.
More detail here: Notes on 240 Volvo Windscreen Wipers although I admit there's more detail in there than you'll need.

hah, indeed, thats a lot of detail. my days of wanting to disassemble a wiper motor to save a $85 replacement cost are long gone, Time is actually money (see attachment)

For some time the wipers on my 85 245 started to wobble and the intermittent position would stop working after a few minutes. Now the whole thing stopped dead!
1. I checked voltage to the connector and is 12V on 3 wires.
2. I removed the motor assembly and cleaned the contacts inside the motor worm gear box.
3. I applied 12V directly to the black and red wires coming out of the motor and it works fine but when I install the whole thing back in the car is no go!
Any suggestions?

with the motor disconnected, do the wipers move smoothly back and forth with minimal slop if you move them by hand?
the three wires /should/ be always-on-power, power-when-wipers-are-on-low, and power-when-wipers-are-on-high.
Portland, eh? If thats Portland OR, take it by Alamo Automotive... those guys rock.
