Default 1990 240 speedometer

Is therea way to determine whether the actual speedo is fried or if it's the sensor on the differential? Replaced the speedo with a used one from the junkyard and still got nada. Any help is appreciated. Which part of the speedo actually fries when you plug in the tach wire?
