1990 740 turbo sedan vs 1992 740 wagon shifting

I'm thinking your kickdown cables are adjusted differently. On my old Hondas, this cable raises the line pressure in the tranny, which raises the shift points, causes it to kick down more frequently and gives firmer shifts. The book actually gives a range of adjustment so that you can adjust shift quality "according to customer preference" . I haven't had the need to study up on the Volvo trannies, since mine have been trouble free, but I would imagine that they're basically the same.
I have a '91 740 turbo wagon and recently acquired an '89 240 wagon, both automatics. I, too, was surprised at the difference between the two. You can barely feel the 240 shift at all, as opposed to the 740 which I would describe as shifting firmly, but not harshly. My personal preference is the firmer shift, which is also supposed to prolong the life of the clutches, so I'm going to be experimenting with cable adjustments shortly..
