Default 1990 Volvo 740GL Problems

Hello all, I am new here and was reading through posts that seem to replicate the problems I am having with my car. However, the part lingo is foreign to me.

I have been having a starting/stalling problem with my car. There has been so many parts changed (fuel pump, fuel relay, fuel regulator, mapping sensor, fuel filter, spark plugs) and who knows what else. I also had to replace a few hoses as they had gotten brittle and were cracking. Also, the PCV valve was taken out and cleaned. It was totally clogged. The second person I saw yesterday looked at that part again and he replaced the thin hose that was attached to that as it literally cracked in half when he bent it.

My first question is how do I tell if my car has a Regina engine. I am being told different things from 2 different people (both of whom work on volvos).

My car, despite what the glovebox manual says, has a single fuel pump in the gas tank. The manual shows one along the line right behind the fuel filter. Well, there is no external fuel pump. I did call a Volvo dealership yesterday and spoke with the parts department about the fuel pump. They would only give me a PN of 3507-736 and would not even give me the PSI number. I tried calling around to local car parts stores to see if they can cross reference that number with an aftermarket part and no one could. Is there only ONE pump for this car?

As to how the car is acting: I have a hard time starting it up. It takes many times of turning the key over to even start it. I have to hold down the gas pedal to get the car to 2000 RPMs and hold it there and then slightly back off and hope that it will them idol at 1500 RPMs. From there, I can be off the gas pedal and still have to wait until the car goes down to 1000 RPMs before I move it. I get alot of hesitation, spitting and sputtering and eventually it will move more than 10-20 mph. Believe me, you don't want to be the cars behind me while I wait for the car to get moving. Once moving, I can get onto a major road and get up to 60 mph and I just hope that I make it to my destination. However, once I reach my exit and have to slow the car down, the problems start right back up again. I keep trying to switch to 2nd gear to give it a kick, sometimes it works, sometimes not.

Now, if there is anyone out there who can help me figure out my mess and link me to pictures of things such as the area to look to find out if I have a regina engine or not. I read people talking about the coil something but I have no idea what and where that is. My engine is supposedly a B230F. I was told that perhaps the engine could have been changed. I acquired the car at just about 100000K miles on it and now has about 142K.I am getting the brushoff from all Volvo dealer's maintenance departments. They refuse to give me the PSI Radius for my car.I am embedding a photo of the upper right side of my engine. If more photos are needed to help me, let me know as I have a few others.

Thank you

First off, go to www.stepbystepvolvo.com and download free guide to 740/940 no-starts. The guide shows the ignition coil for an LH-Jetronic fuel injection. The Regina is not cylindrical in design; it's more squarish.

Also, the first thing I would try on your car is a new air filter. Sometimes, that does wonders!

First off, I forgot to add that I did just replace the air filter as well.

So you are saying my engine is a non-regina engine?

I went to the site you linked briefly and perhaps I should have said that my car is not a turbo. Do you know what the PSI radius for my single in tank fuel pump should be?

Thank you

Check Figure 2 in the no-start guide. The ignition coil there is cylindrical, therefore it is an LH-Jetronic system. If yours is similar, then yours is also an LH-Jetronic system.

Doesn't matter about turbo. Most of the diagnosis is for non-turbo. Realize that the guide is for dead engines, where the conditions are constant. For gremlins (occasional no-starts), it is much more difficult to diagnose.

Sorry, don't know PSI for in-tank pump.

You have Regina FI. Bosch has a regular coil, yours, in the picture, has the Regina coil.
As far as your other problems,it's hardwhen there have been so many parts replaced, and I wonder why people do that. When all of that is changed, the question is: what part was installed incorrectly, what part is wrong, what hose is not plugged in right, etc.
If you change one thing, then you go back to it, and deal with it, you change ten things, you multiply your problems... You situation is not unique, and for a person who is not into DYI, it is hard... I would recheck ALL that's been done, I know, easier said than done, but that's what you have to do.

You also might want to replace the distributor cap and rotor and spark plug wires. www.stepbystepvolvo.com has some hints on this under "Noises, Poor Performance, Easy Fixes, and Tune Up."

fredbyte, I am totally lost. In your diagram 2, I do not have that part there. I will put a picture of that area of my engine.

tedv, one thing that was different when changed was the look of the mapping sensor. What I have in there now looks more like a circut board. I would have to go look for what I took out, but I believe it had a black smooth surface.

I appreciate the help guys. I don't know the parts until it is time for me to change them and then I learn.

I called fcp groton on that fuel pump and their number matches what the dealer gave me as the part number. The person I spoke with told me to look under the dash on the passenger side to see if I see anything that says Bosch and I see nothing whatsoever, just black plastic covers. There is nothing under the hood either that says Bosch.

Please help me get through this before I pull all my hair out[&o]

Tedv is correct. You have a Regina system. My diagram deals with Bosch.

I appreciate all the time you put into my plea for help. If I may ask because this is something someone told me, does the non-regina engine have a Map sensor? I was told it did not.
