Fixed The gear that always biodegrades in the speedometer head drives the odometer only. If both the speedo and odometer croak, a. speedometer cable fell out of the back of the speedo head b. the cable broke or c. the spedometer drive gear where the cable joins the transmission either died or fell out on the pavement, never to be seen again... Incidentally, ask your wife the particulars of the speedo's demise. The easiest way to kill them is to re-set the odometer while the car is in motion. The speedometer cable originally had a supposed tamper proof collar where it attaches to the speedo...the collar also serves as a positive attachmemt ...when they get jacked with, it's no longer a simple thing to keep them attached permanently. On my 144, I have to re-attach it about every 3 months.

Hey, I am new to fixing volvos, and pretty much all other cars as well. I have a volvo 740 (or 760, long story) and the speedo and odometer stopped working about 3 months back. I took it to midas, to get an inspection. They passed it, and after I asked if they saw the speedo didn't work, they said no, then went and checked the "wire" and said it was alright. I think they were lieing because they coulden't find it.
anyway. before it stopped working it started jumping up and down.
So... how would I fix this problem?
It is a 760(or 740) 1989 Volvo turbo intercooler staton wagon.
I would really like to get to 300K miles already. It's at 295K and I have driven more than 5K miles on it after the speedo broke...
