Default 1992 940 Speedo Not Working

I just bought a '92 940 GL. This is my first Volvo and I love it. The only mechanical issue I have at this time is the speedo/odo does not work. The rest of the instruments work as expected.

Can anyone provide some insight into this problem and how they solved a similar issue?

Thank you!
Jake

Great car!
Common issue, especially on '92s. Options:Get a new speedo, have this one fixed or get a used one (hard to find)... It's the diodes inside that go bad and must be changed. Speedo Interchanges with '91/92 740 or 940 speedos. Outside chance the electronic pick up wire at the differential may be faulty.

Thanks Lev. Is there an easy way to pull out the instrument cluster?

Well, yeah, in theory... There are two slots in the bezel, each side. Stick a small tool like a flat screwdriver in each and depress the spring inside, you have to feel for it. Then with another hooklike tool, pull the bezel out, one side at the time should work. It's better if done by pulling both sides simultaneously but for that you need 4 hands... Now, sometimes this works beautifully, others, not so good. The spring(s) inside get stuck and the bezel gets hung, and it takes a lot of swearing and such... Some choose to go from underneath to avoid that but the procedure I outline is the supposed way... Give it a shot!

I had to replace the capacitors on my 92 740 speedometer, works great now. This write-up below helped me through it. If you were planning on switching out the speedometer anyways, you don't have much to lose by trying to fix the old one. The replacement caps are only a couple bucks.
