Default how to replace valve cover gaskets

740 turbo, 1990

I bought a valve cover gasket planning on switching it out quickly like I have done on previous cars, but then I read I can mess up the valves and its a really difficult job?

Advice please and thanks as always.

Mess up valves? Only if you have a seizure or something similar..It's quite simple...just use a daub of silicone where the gasket curves up around cam and dizzy...front and back. Very straight forward.

I thought so. I've done valve covers in the past. Starting reading about how there was a device to clamp down on the valve covers while you unfasten the bolts so the cam/valves don't jump or bend. Was confused and frustrated. Glad to hear it's straight forward. Should I use the silicone on the valve cover side, not the head side? I have the rubbery/fiber type gasket (if that makes sense). It's rubbery but relatively stiff. So I don't need to put any gasket sealer anywhere else? Thanks for your help as always.

It's a SOHC redblock yes? (black valve cover)? If so, it's a very easy job, but clean around the front and rear cam saddles and smear a little sealant into the corners there as Swiftjustice just observed.

Regards, Andrew.
