Difficulty Of Replacing Coolant Overflow Tank (Expansion Tank)
Hi all,
About 4 months ago I came into ownership of a fantastic condition Volvo 940 Polar. Love the car and it's been maintained very well.
However, it has recently sprung a slow leak from the coolant expansion tank (or at least I'm hoping it's just this!)
Last night I caught this video of the leak in action while the engine was warmed up and running. Video is at youtu .be/Miyv_BfF8BU (I can't post links yet - so hopefully you can work out how to make that work)
When the engine is cold, very little - if any - coolant seeps out. So I'm guessing the issues are coming when it's pressurized?
It seems to be coming from the bottom of the tank, potentially the hose assembly but also potentially the tank itself.
How hard would it be to replace the tank? I'm not particularly technically minded. Is this something I could do myself?
I imagine a garage would charge a lot for this to be done!

replacing the coolant tank is a job you can do with a screw driver... its just a couple hose clamps. I'd inspect the hoses and if the ends are cracked at all, replace them too. IIRC, the skinny hose is just generic hose (6mm? I forget) but the fatter one at the bottom is a molded hose so you need to get the proper volvo part
we never got a "Polar" model in the USA so I dunno whether its the same hose. on a US model non-turbo 1992+ its 9155496. on a US model turbo, its 354149 which has a T in it, for the turbo water cooling.
the coolant bottle changed in 1992, I believe... older cars had a round one, 92+ have a larger square one.

The car is a '95, low pressure turbo model so I guess hose 9155496.
It has the square coolant tank.
Do you know of any sites that ship parts internationally for Volvo? Local Volvo dealer (well the New Zealand importer) wants nearly $200 for the tank, $100 for the cap, and goodness only knows what for the hoses!

we never saw the LPT models here, our turbo was the B230FT
I can turn on the international parts catalog in my VADIS... do you know what your engine is called ? B230xx or B200xx or what? choices I see for 1995 are B200FT, B200GT, B230FB, B230FD, B230FK, B230FT, and B230G ... pretty sure FD is non-turbo, and I thought the G models were higher compression than the F models.
oh, and do you have air conditioning? stick shift or automatic transmission? those all effect the choices in the international catalog.
for a 1995 B230FK, I'm showing the hose is 3531884 w/o A/C, or 3547149 with A/C (whoa, I left the 7 out in my earlier post, ooops!).
the expansiono tank is 9122997, and the cap is 9445462. a real volvo tank is US$62 MSRP, aftermarket made-in-China tanks are half that (Meyle, etc). the Volvo cap is US$43 MSRP, aftermarket ones as cheap as US$5. the A/C hose is US$50.
isn't US$1 about NZ$2 ?

- Automatic transmission
- Air conditioning
- Right Hand Drive (not sure if that will affect the part requirements).
1 USD is about $1.40 NZD ... so quite a good exchange rate for us at the moment.
Thanks so much for all your help
