Default Heat either full on or full off

I have had this problem with every one of my 240's and was hoping that someone knows the solution.

Back when my '89 240 Wagon was fairly new, I could adjust the amount of heat by moving the hot/cold lever. However, when that car got older, it no longer would mix the air. Instead it either would be full hot or full cold no matter how I try to adjust it.

That car is long gone but my current two cars ('90 and '91 240s) suffer the same problem.

Anyone out there have an idea on how to fix this issue? The heat is so good in these cars that even with Chicago's winters, full hot is way too much.

Thanks in advance...

That is the classic failure of the heater control valve. There are two styles out there - the older original metal unit and the new plastic one. For the longest time the original wasn't avalible, but it has came back as Ready-aire part number 5864.

The O'Reilly website lists them for $75.

Thanks for the reply. I went up and looked on FCP Groton and they seem to have a replacement for around $55.

Where is this part located on the car? Is it in the center console or is it fairly accessable?

If I have to tear the entire center console apart to get at it, I may just decide to live with the issue.

Thanks again

Its to the right of the driver's right foot ... on the side of the center console. The biggest issue is clamping off the hoses and collecting the coolant.

I personally wouldn't use FCP's "conversion" kit ... unlike what the website states, the original valve is now avalible.
