Other preventative maintenance when replacing heater fan?
Hey everyone,
1986 Volvo 245 here. Wife got about 2 miles down the road the other day, and she said smoke started coming out of fan vents. She thought is smelled strongly of electrical. Turned off fan, smoke disappeared, and drove it home. I started the car up, everything in the engine looked good, turned on fan and it made a high pitching whining sound as it ran. Is it safe to assume that the fan is toast?
I know replacing the fan on these cars is an absolute b****... Is there any other preventative maintenance I should do with the dash ripped apart?
Thanks!

probably a good idea to replace the heater core if you get it all apart. but there's the 'chainsaw' method of replacing 240 fans which is supposed to be quite a bit easier, basically you cut holes in hte plastic airbox to get at the fan, then seal them back up. this requires a fraction of the disassembly.
