Sunroof opens...but wont close
|
So when I bought my '90 740, the lady selling it said the sunroof didn't work. I took her word for it, but I couldn't resist pressing the button anyway. The sunroof began to open unexpectedly, and I took my finger off the button. When I tried to close it again, it kind of lurched forward, makes a humming sound, but ultimately won't move. In another thread someone recommended lubricating the rails before I mess with new motors and relays. I'm dying to try this, but what do I do if it won't close even after lubrication?

You can also try cleaning the switch. There could have a bunch of deposites on one side, but not the other. Open it up, but be careful not to break the little tabs or lose any of the little copper plates.

What would I used to clean it? Any type of solvent?
By the way, thanks for the help. This place is awesome. I drove a '91 240 for awhile, and this is my second Volvo. I love the 740 wagon, my god I do. I just wish I could have afforded one that didn't have so many problems. I'm looking forward to learning how to fix them though!

I recommended lubing it. You can close it MANUALLY by taking off the cover and using a screwdriver or a torx (is the case may be) to close it. Sorry, but the switch is NOT your problem-OBVIOUSLY IT WORKS SINCE YOU ARE GETTING MOTOR ACTION BOTH WAYS! It is either stuck due to lack of use and or maintenance or a bad cable. But if it doesn't seem to pull favoring one side, then it's just stuck, and lubing the tracks and working it little by little should free it up. Run the engine while you do this so it gets good el. power.

Did you replace or clean the switch first? Always try the simplest task first.

My sunroof would open but would not close, well sort of not close. The motor works both ways, but I still had a bunch of deposites on my switch and now, after I cleaned it, I have no problem. I still need to put some more lube on the rails.
