Wont Start - Thinks its in Gear
I have a 91 240. I doesnt start, the engine doesnt even try to turn over. Well I assumed it was the starter and replaced that, yet it changed nothing. Well, I got in touch with the previous owner and he said it was "Some wire that told the car it is in gear, even though its in park." Well, apparently he sent it to the dealer to be repaired about 4 years ago, and has no idea how to tell me to repair it.

Does anyone know what wire he is talking about, and how to repair it? I'd really rather do it myself than pay some knucklehead $500 to do it.

What kind of transmission is in it. It could be the neutral safety switch. This is located inside the shift boot. It if a black plastic piece which has several wires and a lever inside with a part that hooks to a lever and indicates that the car is in park or neutral. This pieve is either bad or has become loose and is not in the correct position

This part cost me $20 at a junk yard.

Good luck
