Default 1994 850 2.4L won't start, camshaft or crankshaft sensor?

Hi,
New to the forum...and very excited to become a member. Some help/advice would be great.

I have a 1994 850 non-turbo with the 2.4L. It has 260K+ mileage even though the odometer stopped at 151,XXXK. The other night I had to move my car off the street quickly because a fire truck had to get in. So I hopped in, turned the key and threw it into reverse. As soon as I put it in reverse the car shook violently and died. I threw it into reverse before the engine calmed down to idle(usually takes 1 second after starting for it to idle down)...if you know what I'm talking about?....It has never started since. It turns over fine and it is getting fuel because I can smell it after trying to start it+ I hear the fuel pump turning on. I checked the ignition module today and it's fine. The coil I believe is fine also. The timing chain/belt was replaced about 2 years ago...approx...25,000 miles ago. I though it maybe could be the timing belt but I heard they usually fray before they pop/snap. My guess now is the crankshaft sensor or camshaft sensor...Any ideas how I can test these before I start replacing or any other ideas of what it could be? Thanks for the input,
Joe

Hey Joe,

Welcome to the forum, I hope you find it helpful & enjoyable.

The first thing we would do is to pull trouble codes from the ECU. I'll list a URL for some instructions and a URL link to Volvospeed.com (but as far as direct communication goes, our forum is better than anyone else's):

https://volvoforums.com/m_87468/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm

http://volvospeed.com/Repair/a2.html

Let us know your findings.

I had a no start issue on my '94 850T recently, coincidentally after changing my vent hose on the fuel tank. After checking fuel and spark, I checked the Camshaft Position Sensor. Sure, enough, the plug on the sensor end had dry rotted and was causing a short. I bought a new one (wanted to order from FCP Groton but the local Autozone had one and I wanted to compare manufacturers). Turns out the Wells Autozone one (same price as FCP and in stock) is actually Bosch unit (OE). Outside of the box it came in being non-Bosch, it has the same Bosch part numbers and logo. I installed it yesterday and it started perfectly again.

I would check that first.- AB

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am an avid member of the fullsizechevy forum because I love my chevy truck. I'm not too familiar with my 1994 volvo 850 which is my DD because of high gas prices. I am going to pull the codes hopefully this weekend to figure what the problem might be. I'll keep ya posted thanks..

Alright guys, an update....

I checked the codes for A2 and got 1-1-1, no stored faults,

I checked the other holes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, for ****tz and got #3 ECU faulty and RPM signal OK
and #7 IAT Missing or faulty...not sure if it matters because supposedly the codes are only good for A2 which is #2 port on the blinker thing.

The car turns over, engine shakes...I have spark on all my plugs, I smell gas, (if the ignition coil were bad I wouldn't get spark, correct me if I'm wrong), not sure what else it could be...it really trys to start but it just can't....

Could it be the crankshaft sensor???????

This saga is over...one will never guess...

My dad's volvo has always had a little brake fluid leak...so what happened for the last 3 months of it not starting was that the vehicle didn't think I had my foot on the brake pedal when trying to start it even though I did because of the low brake fluid...
Wow...so when you have a starting problem...check your brake fluid before you spend many hours looking at the coil, plugs, rotor, sensors, etc...
Thanks for the help guys....

I came to the realization after I had spark, fuel, and the engine just wasn't firing up...

That should have nothing to do with the car running.
I think what was messing up just isn't now.
Low brake fluid will not prevent the car from running.
