Default 1994 volvo 850 won't start

Started my 850 estate yesterday lunch time it ran for about 3 seconds then cut out and has not started since.
Called out the AA the engine has no spark, no injector pulse and a camshaft sensor fault code.
The AA mechanic said the crankshaft sensor was not putting out enough voltage aaprox 0.26V.
Have replaced crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor today.
Engine turnes over but still wont start, dose not even try.[&:]
[:@]PLEASE HELP!

But the ignition in slot II and have a friend listen near the pass. side rear wheel and see if they hear the fuel pump priming. Also, crank the engine and have a friend bang on the fuel tank a couple times.

If your car starts w/ the banging technique, your fuel pump is toast. IF you dont' hear it priming, either your pump is toast or your relay is toast.

Did the mechanic do anything about the spark?

The AA mechanic said the crankshaft sensor was not sending a strong enough signal to the ECU hence no spark, no injector pulse but i have replaced both of these.
I have recently replaced the fuel pump relay and have good presure at the fuel rail.
Totaly Baffled????

If you have good pressure at the fuel rail...

Then your issue is spark.

Remember, three things to start a car. Fuel, Air, Spark. You need to test and see if you have spark.

I would look at the Cam Position sensor before the coil.

Hello mate,

Greetings from Narita, Japan.

I just went through the factory manual and it says the CMP sensor output voltage varies between 0.1V to 5V during cranking.

I will attach the page that has CMP sensor testing procedure (a digital multimeter is required), as well as the location for OBD-I code-retrieving unit location in the engine compartment (not sure if '95 UK models come with OBD-II; OBD-II was installed on '94 and later US models). The socket for ignition module is A-6.

Please note that I'll be deleting themanual in the next few days so please save it in your PC, or you can get the same manual at: http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/volvo_wo...techdocs.shtml

I hope this helps. If not, come back again.

Cheers,

JPN

Fault codes found after ignition failure 3-2-4 / 2-1-4 / 1-3-1. I have replaced both sensors but still no spark. The AA mechanic said the coil was powering up ok but not firing. He also said that the injectors wer not receiving any signal.

All those codes refer to either the Cam or crank sensor.
131= RPM sensor signal absent.
214= RPM sensor signal absent Intermittently.
324= Cam position sensor signal absent Intermittently.

Have just had similar problem with my 94, 850 estate. Stopped at lights all dash lights on, would not start. Got RAC man says no pulse to injectors no spark, so trucked home. ( bill to come!!) Guess what, get up knacked next morning and it starts. Take it to local Bosch man fault code says maf sensor fault and cam position fault. Recommends changing both sensors but he aint got them so will have to wait. £35 for diagnostics.
Look on web see cam position sensor c£100!! Dont want to spend money on things that get me no further forward like animal has done. Bring it home to wait for quote from Bosch man, run around town few miles for shoping, park up, go back and it wont start again. Wait till morning and see if things change again!!
Somebody must know what gives, PLEASE help with advice or what to do next!!

Welcome to the club, mate.

I hope you find the forum to be helpful & enjoyable. If you could wait a bit, the top-dog of the forum named Moderator Tech would be back in a couple of weeks or less I believe.

If your 850 is '94, I believe it has both OBD-I & OBD-II diagnostic terminals (not sure if this applies to the UK models). If you need an instruction as to how to reset the codes, let me know and I'll post a pic that has all you need to know. You won't need any tools, just an average intelligence and code table are the only requirements.

In the United States, some auto parts shops provide free OBD-II diagnostic service, which gives you an instant access to the ECU (on-board computer) and let you know what the problems are.

With age, it is not unusual for both sensors to be shot. However, I would first reset codes and see if both codes come back. I am dead-exhausted right now due to working in Japan (gotta love the politics here[8D]), but if you need instructions as to how to test those sensors, I can either post instructions or guide you to a UK web site where I got the part of factory manuals from.

Also, Volvos, as well as all makes, require TLC and if regular tune-up & scheduled maintenance are neglected, the results would be quite costly.

Cheers,

JPN

Thanks JPN,
Have worked out how to reset codes from my haynes and get codes when I need em.
Bosch man reset codes when he did diagnostics but after Idid bit running about and parked up fault light was on and I got the same codes, ie MAF sensor and Cam pos sensor. I cleared the codes but would not start. Left it till morning and it started. Just moved it a few yards and no faults but scared to take it out in case packs in on highway.
Have deciced to bite the bullet and replace both sensors, expensive but got to get moving. Will take couple days, will let you know what happens.
Regards, Kris.

Is Boschman "English English" for Mechanic? I like that lol. What's a "Bosch" anyways?

Hi Redturbo,
I believe engine management system for 850 volvo was designed and manufactured by the German firm Bosch. Many of the parts used, sensors etc, are made by Bosch. In the U.K. we have a chain of garage services run by the same firm hence Bosch man. I took my volvo there in the hope that they may be a bit more knowledgeable.-----What is "I like thatlol"?
Regards, Kris.

Hello mate,

You're right, may European cars are equipped with Bosch parts, especially electrical & electronics components, including the fuel control/engine management systems. Even though European products are usually of top-quality, when it comes to electrical & electronics, Japanese & Koreans seem to get it better (Denso, etc...).

Anyway, I believe the problem has been resolved. I wish you luck, but come back anytime when you have a problem.

Cheers,

JPN
