Default 1997 850 Volvo GLT Wagon Radiator Leak

I have seen the leak in the radiator myself, so I know where it is. The dude at Tread Quarters told me I was going to need a new radiator and these were the prices he gave me:

1. Radiator = 269.98
2. Thermostat and Gasket 25.69 + 29.40 (Labor) = 55.09
3. Two gallons of anti-freeze = 17.98
4. Misc. Labor Units = 176.44
5. Shop Supply Fee = 39.00
6. Sales tax = 24.69
7. For a grand total = 583.18

Now, is this guy taking advantage of me or are these reasonable and customary fees to have a new radiator put in my car? Is this a major job, or can this be done by my brother in law? All the hoses are new and good to go. The temperature is never showing an overheated engine. However, I keep having to add coolant to the expansion tank. When that gets low, the light comes on. Originally, it was one of the hoses, but that was fixed, but there is something between the expansion tank and the radiator, and I saw the small leaks to one side of the radiator as the dude did all the tests.

What can I do here? Thank you in advance for all your help.

call a junk yard and pick up your own rad for nomore than 100
go to a local parts store and pick up a new thermostat for 15 bux and undo the 2 screws yourself and put it in. 25 bux for a gasket, are you kidding me? theyre 5$ at volvo dealership.

Do not deal with that mechanic...post a thread up on here for someone in your area that will do it....lots of us would love to help you out for half the price like boxpin said.

Those prices are a little high, but not obscene for a shop.

Best advice would be to do it yourself if you're mechanically inclined, or if not, take it to a recommended indy volvo shop in your area.

If you're going to keep the car I would shy away from recycled cooling system parts; they may not be any better than what you're replacing.

And whether you do the work, or have a shop do it, get OEM cooling system parts; one good source is FCP

Good luck!
