Default 850 engine compatability

I have bought a 1996 850 GLT non-turbopossibly needing an engine. Popped at least a head gasket - turns over, no start, compression pulse in coolant reservior when cranking, timing belt (15,000 miles)marks lined upcorrect.
Code -vin 55, engine family B5254S.
I have found one from a 1993 same 55 vin code and B5254FS. The guy that has it says they will not interchange, I need a '94 and up. Can anyone tell me if this is true. Was a '93 a one year only then new mods in '94?
I have been a technician for over 20 years, my first Volvo, I love a challenge. Thanks in advance!

Default RE: 850 engine compatability

Hey Bsup,

No, to my knowledge, they are not interchangable.

There many differances that I am sure Tech can explain in detail.

They are very different engines and I dont think that it will match the transmission or the computer of the 1996.
