In a little bit i am hoping to install a boost controler and i have heard that once i start to run over 10psi of boost i have to start worrying about detonation and all sorts of other things. I was wondering if anybody could help me out with modifications that could help me stop these problems from happening like guages to install, ECU upgrades, larger turbos, BOV, anything that could help.
I am new to Volvos and new to turbo engines so anybodys knowledge is appreciated

RE: 850 mods
Yes, proper gauges are the first place to start -- Air Fuel Mixture, Exhaust Gas Temp, and Fuel Pressure Gauges will warn you that you are starting to run lean. Running lean -- knocking and pinging -- will damage pistons, rings, and rod bearings. It would be great if someone could develop a gauge using the knock sensor. I am not aware of anyone that has done this.
Our cars use an expensive $200 Bosch O2 sensor. This is a wide-band sensor. Much more accurate than the old $30 Bosch narrow-band from the 80's. We cannot use the air/fuel mixture gauges that you see in the turbo magazines -- Autometer, Halmeter, etc. All of them require a narrowband O2 sensor -- very inaccurate, not a good tool for tuning.

My educated guess is that our ECU's are not programmed for running boost above 10 psi. It could possibly kick out trouble codes. I really don't know as I am new to the Volvo world.
I wouldn't bother with a manual boost controller -- boost will be all over the place. I prefer a quality electronic boost controller such as Greddy Profec-B

Now that you are running above factory boost levels, your turbo may begin to start making ugly noises. Then, I prefer a quality blow-off valve such as Turbo XS Bypass Valve Type H

This one can be installed either as a blow-off valve or re-routed before turbo as bypass valve.
