850 Moonroof Problem

850 Moonroof Problem
I've just been struck with a bunch of bad luck this past few week. I JUST repaired the seatback cable to fix the tilt on the seat. NOW whilst i was driving somewhere, while it was RAINING, my buddy thought i'd be funny to open the moonroof... then i tried closing it and all of a sudden it wouldn't close... it goes like 1/4 of the way and the returns to the fully open position. it kinda sounds like something is blocking the tracks or something but i can't quite pinpoint what the problem is?? also we looked between the glass and moonroof cover and saw that the back portion of the rubber seal has come off, but didn't look like it was obstructing anything. so now i'm stuck in a rainy city with a moonroof that won't close. please, anyone with some insight on how i can overcome this ridiculous problem? thanks!

RE: 850 Moonroof Problem
Sadly, the Volvo engineers pooped the bed on their sunroof design when they built it with a bunch of plastic hinges and other pieces that turn brittle over time. My suggestion is that you follow the instructions... http://volvospeed.com/Repair/sunroof.php ... and remove the sunroof glass and see what you've got. I ended up having a similar problem and was able to clear out the track of pieces of plastic. Once that was done, I could nurse the sunroof closed when I open it. I don't open it a lot. I can tell you that I priced out the track on one side through Volvo at $800. I won't bother. Maybe one day I'll get lucky at an auto wrecker.

But his won't close so he can't even get the glass out.
But if he doesn't hear crunching he might me ablt to try to retime it and it might be fine.
If not hopefully in the next Month I am going to be making a post about the sunroof assembly.
The one in the Yellow R is broke as well. I will be replacing the entire assembly with one out of another car.
Then looking mine over and posting what I find.
Mine won't tilt up or even open.

RE: 850 Moonroof Problem
i was able to get the sunroof almost fully closed today and it looks like it's definitely off it's tracks one side closed more than the other and the moonroof sliding cover thing it almost impossible to move. is it hard to try and put it back on its tracks? i'm guessing i would have to remove the interior headliners and try and put it back on its tracks? and if i were to do that, what's the best repair manual to use?

RE: 850 Moonroof Problem
Hey now,
My S/R isn't broken but I do have a leak and need to fix it as it has been raining off and on for the last couple of days here.
Sorry that yours is kinda stuck open as I can imagine that it's a pain.
Others have posted links for fixes and I hope that at least one of them can help you out as I would hate for it to start raining, especially if you don't have a garage or carport.
I bought my car a couple of years back and the previous (pr*#k) owner neglected (that and other things) to mention that the car also had a leak that let water come into the passanger footwell. So imagine my surprise when I jump into the car to head to work and found over an inch of water on the passanger side floor [sm=headbang.gif].
I didn't have the time to find out where it was coming from then, just enough time to scoop about 3/4 of a gallon of water out and head to work and of course could see where it was coming from but couldn't figure how it was getting in. I rained non-stop for almost four days.
I eventually found that the cowling that is supposed to be flush with the windshield was drooping abit and that was letting water flow throught the intake for the blower box and right into the car. this also explained why I could hear a bearing squeel when I used the fan and why I had to replace the blower.
My fix wasn'tpermanent and I'll have to do it again.[]
I'm going to use clear silicone to go around the outside of the S/R and that should take care of that and I'll work on the W/S leak on the weekend.
All the best and hope that you can fix or get it fixed.

RE: 850 Moonroof Problem
For those reading this post, keep in mind that there are two drainage lines for the sunroof which run from the front corners down the pillar between the windshield and front doors and drain out behind the front wheels. They sometimes get plugged and water backs up around the sunroof and then finds its way inside the roof there. Just a heads up.
