Default 850 TURBO Rebuild

I recently purchased my first volvo, a 1995 850 sedan Turbo. I am getting alot of oil smoke from the turbo unit and i am looking for a rebuild kit. Does anyone know which style/brand/type of turbo unit was installed on these cars????? Any suggestions for where to find an affordable turbo rebuild kit?

Thanks! any info is helpful!

If it’s the original turbo and assuming it is then it would be a Mitsubishi tdo4hl conical 15g. How many miles on the car and what have you done to it for maintenance since you’ve had it?
What makes you think the turbo’s gone bad? Where are you seeing the oily smoke??

Clogged vent box would make the car smoke like that as well.

The car has 140,000 miles on it and i just purchased it a week ago with the problem. The smoke is located in the vicinity of the turbo unit. I assume it is the origional Turbo. Where is the vent box located so i can check that to possibly pinpoint the problem a little better.

The pcv,(vent box), is under the intake, you have to remove it to replace the pcv. With the car running in park, pull the dipstick and the oil fill cap, you should get a slight vacumn. Any vapor pressure there would indicate a plugged up pcv. The turbo won't smoke right there at the turbo externally if it was bad. How does your car seem to boost?

The boost gauge does not seem to move from the middle at all. I removed the plastic intake cover and noticed oil lying in the valleys of the intake.

That's a sign of back pressure usually caused by a clogged PCV system. They sell a kit at fcpgroton for a little over $100 that can be used to replace the hoses and the vent box. I think it's about a 2-4 hour job, but not that hard for a person who doesn't mind getting dirty. Plenty of instructions on how to do it here and on volvospeed.com.

The turbo also seems to hesitate slightly. so when i remove the dipstick and oil fill cap i should feel a vacuum over the areas?

I've been having the same problem lately. Last time I changed the oil I noticed that oil was leaking out of the turbo and onto the exhaust manifold. Also, the car wasn't boosting as much as it had been. Lately, the turbo has been boosting the way it should but I can still smell smoke when the engine is idling. Should the whole PCV system be replaced or a certain component? Are there any diagrams that could help me understand what exactly is going on. I'm not quite understanding how this is leading to a leaky turbo... Thank you.

Here are the parts from fcpgroton with a drawing of how the parts fit together for the Turbo model 850.

Ok, so I think I'm starting to understand this a little better. Is there a certain part that is usually the culprit or should whe whole system be replaced? Also, how difficult it to replace?
