Default Aftermarket 850 Stereo Options

I'm considering replacing my factory stereo with an aftermarket unit, what are you guys running? I have a 97 850 waggon and really don't want to run a cheap single din.

you can use any single or double-din you want, with certain double-din head units you'll have to file down the 2 side rails in the stereo slot, keeping you from ever being able to go back to your old unit

Did you have to use any additional hardware or brackets to make the double din work?

Chances are you'll just have to file down the two rails on the sides and then use the double din sleeve that comes with the stereo.

(the trim piece needed some shaving to make fit perfectly, which is why it looks like **** in that picture)

I shaved down the backside of the bezel and it sits flush and looks 100x better than that pic.

And after having a double din, I don't think I'll ever have a single din stereo again. Double-din is the way to go.

Other than the aforementioned filing, i didnt have to modify anything, and i dont think i used any additional brackets either. it was a pretty easy install, as I remember.

I wanted an MP3 compatible radio, but my cassette player was broken so I modded in my own AUX input into the mini tape deck amp for free and in less than a couple of hours. It has full stereo, great quality, and works like a charm!

I have a cheap single DIN, thank you

Well that and two 480 watt Jensen amps and a 700 watt DP amp, two 12" X 2 base boxes and four bookshelf speakers. Lets me listen to every note Barry Manilow can hit.

I don't have mine adjusted to "thunp", so I hope I'm not "THAT GUY" !!!

But it really does punch out a clear and vibrant reproduction of whatever happens to move me at the time. Best time is around Halloween when I put in a CD of BBC sound effects. They have a cut of pipe organ music that just sounds like Vincent Price is right around the corner. That one gets cranked. The looks are priceless.

I'm also running a 12" sub....mine's in my spare tire. I didnt put it there to boom down the street at all. In fact, I hate that kinda music. I just like for all frequencies to be present when i listen to my music.

Ok, so I think I'm gonna save up for a double din setup, Any suggestions of units or places to buy. I'd like a decent GPS and I-pod Compatible, and at least one output for an amp later.

I honestly just don't care for the look of a single din in a car that is going to have a gaping naked spot in the dash, I've used them before in my 242, s10, 944, accord, and other misc vehicles here and there and have absolutely no complaints on sound quality or performance, just aesthetics here.

On line at Crutchfield.com They would have a number of choices.

i've gone for a roughly period correct headunit upgrade, after my factory CD player decided to die on me

it consists of older school Alpine gear and will be rounded out by some nice new Focal amps and Focal front/rear speakers...

but for the headunit replacement i went
Alpine CDA-7892E

and an Alpine 11 band graphic EQ

now to get an ISO plug so i don't do any wire cutting and can get my SC-815 repaired and have it if i ever need to...
