You know Jim, CV joint issues are such a common problem, I'm surprised more posters didn't join in on this thread.

I learned a lot from this experience. And I will never ever forget to inspect the boots when buying another car

Didn't know Tech was going away for a few days. Glad he was here when I needed him. Hope you have a good time Tech.

This morning, I drove the car to the shop to have it inspected. Cripes, there was a thwacking sound on the right front. Don't know what it is, but it went away when I turned, so I assume it's not the jonts. Don't think it's the brake pads, it was kind of a loud metal twang sound....same sound when I coasted in neutral. I could only envision something hitting against the interior rotor splash guard. Oh well, gives the inspection guys something to focus on. Maybe I left a tool in there or something, LOL. I'll just let them tell me what's up. Got a feeling I may be replacing rotors on this thing anyway.

Now that's something that is pretty easy. I have done that myself.

Watch the shims on the rear pads. I know my 97 has half shims that need to go back on there or you will have vibrating at low speed. Not all years use them though and I'm not sure what year you have, but if you see half shims put them back on.

OH Crap! there were shims and I did not put them back on. I'll save them and watch for any vibrations. Good news is I got my inspection ticket this morning! Now I'm just waiting to get hold of my insurance guy and get a binder #. Then I'm off to DMV to stand in line for 3 hours, LOL.

Mine is a '97 GLT wagon.

It's a realy weird vibration. Almost sounds like a heavy bass in the car. The half shims with with that red colored no squeal stuff solved it though. You go to a Volvo dealer and tell them you need the half shims and they know exactly what you are talking about.

Hey Jim,

I saved the old shims. I do believe they are the half shims you speak of.

I'm sensitive to the vibration, but have only noticed a very very slight vibe one time when braking at around 3 mph, otherwise it appears fine. I do have some bad brake squeal, but it seems to be diminishing on it's own.

Let's see if these pics post OK so you guys can see the the results of your efforts.
