Default Metric Nut on license plate

Hello. We just purchased a 1995 850 GLT Wagon last weekend. I handled the registration and tag purchase today. I came home and my husband went to put the plates on the back and realized that the nuts were missing off the four bolts that hold the plate on.

He said they appeared to require metric nuts. What size? Can wepick these metric nuts up at a hardware store (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.)?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. Wonderful. We'll give the 8mm a try!

I just went out to our car out of curiousity and Tech is 100% correct, ours are 8 MM. I would have thought 10MM as that seems to be more common....go figure

The 8MM ended up being a bit too big. It took a 6MM (M6 1.0). The 6 fit perfect, FYI.

Then someone must have changed the bracket in the car.

For anyone searching for tag nut size, the size that fit our original Volvo bracket was 6mm (or M6).
