Odometer not working 95 850
The odometer on my '94 850 non-turbo stopped working. I don't have a problem with that but when I had it inspected, the technician said the state has a problem with non functioning odometers, probaly for resale reasons. Does anyone know if Massachusetts exemps older cars from this? Can anyone help me to fix it? thanks in advance, kleuch

Most states exempt cars over 10 years old. You can still find the correct true mileage, the cluster stores it and keeps counting even when the gears strip and stop moving.
I have a odo (not the entire cluster) with 115,000+ on it I'm willing to sell. PM me if you want it. A little easier than taking it apart and replacing the gears.

The best thing to do if you want to know about what is and isn't exempt in MA is just give the DMV a call. That way you know for sure what is and isn't.
The gear replacement link will show you how to get it working again.
The nice thing is you can also pull the actual current mileage out of the computer so you can set the physical readout in the instrument package to reflect the vehicles current miles
Or ... you can just reset the electronic info panel if you have one and add the miles you read off the computer to the distance traveled since you reset. That way you have current mileage without having to go under the hood and count the blinks each time you want to know where you are at.

To retrieve actual mileage from the ECU (contributed by another member or by Volvospeed.com):
1. Switch ignition on
2. Connect the fly wire to socket - A7
3. Push button 5 times
4. When LED comes on and stays on, enter code 1-1-1 as follows:
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- read off response, which will be the last three digits of the odometer miles
5. Repeat steps #3-4, but enter code 1-1-2 (that is, press the button twice on the last step); read off the response, which will be the first three digits of the odometer miles. If you have less than 100,000 miles, the first digit will read as 10 blinks.

I do not believe it is an electrical trouble. The gear was either defective and lost a tooth or two, or not mating with adjacent gears. I would do a research on FCP Groton/IPD for parts and investigate the current gear (I know, no one wants to do the same job twice).

As you said no one wants to do the same job twice, the gear I bougth was ok tested a few times, mating without problem before to reassembly.
