94' 850 transmission
my daughter's 94' 850 doesn't seem to want to down shift when cold (first mile or so). it gets stuck in a gear and won't shift. also every now and then the car won't start, doesn't turn over and the starter solenoid won't engage, after a half dozen attemps the car will suddenly start right up. thebattery is good.the car has 150k miles. bought it a few months ago, no telling when the transmission fluid was changed last.any suggestions

RE: 94' 850 transmission
Hi new2850,
Greetings from Yokohama, Japan.
The following thread may be of some help for your tranny problem:
https://volvoforums.com/m_57162/tm.htm
It may be the solenoid that may be failing, or electrical connection to the solenoid may have open/short. However, double-check on the condition and fluid level of ATF.
Try retrieving the engine & tranny codes from OBD-I terminal & reset them. For starting problem, it may be the starter that is going bad, if the battery is known to be good, or it could be the starter relay.
Code Accessing & Resetting Procedures (No special tester is required for '93-'95 models):
Transmission: http://volvospeed.com/Repair/a1.html
Engine: http://volvospeed.com/Repair/a2.html
Did the car come with a full maintenance record? If not, check to see if the timing belt has been replaced within the last 60,000 miles/4 years. The timing belt must be replaced at every 70,000 miles/5 years, and if not replaced on schedule, it could break and damage the engine.
I'll list a useful URL:

I hope this helps.
