Want More Air?

Because I'm guessing the majority of users here don't know how easy of a mod this is, or that you can do it, and there's always ten threads per day saying "I just bought an 850, what performance things can I do?" Well.....here's one.

The 960 plate does not have the puck on it, N/A does. The puck helps with initial low throttle response, meaning it helps with the transition of the sharp open/close of the plate. It really does not affect the air flow since it is not any larger than the TB shaft. Most people go for the 960 plate, I have both and use the N/A.

The 850 N/A and the 960 throttle plate are the same diameter. The only difference is that (like Boxpin mentioned) the 850 N/A has a semicircular plastic puck attached to it. Buy either removing this puck and filling it's hole, or replacing it with a 960 throttle plate, it slightly increases throttle response. And makes it more peppy when accelerating from a stopped position. Now as to your hieroglyphic of a question above. The simple answer is that the GLT designation in early 850s' was essentially N/A. Later on that designation was reallocated to what is essentially the "between model". This will fill you in.

You're losing me slim. The 960 TB is not a direct swap on to an 850. It is transversed, so has to be modified to fit. You could do that but why would you want to? All you need to change out is the plate. (i.e. the flap in the center with the 2 screws) See what you started Gilber I'm just messing with youvolvoguy23. But yeah, if you remove the 2 torx screws, the plate will pull out. Then you just replace it with the one from the 960. So it was essentially unnecessary for you to buy the entire 960 TB.

No problem. But before we get in to anything, why don't we back up a little bit first. As I'm still confused as to exactly what kind of volvo you have. I know your sig says '96 850. But what model do you have?

O.k. We're finally starting to get on the same page. As far as the cams go, people say the '93 ones are the best. But any 850 NA cams will work. And if there is a difference, I'm sure it's negligible. As far as your manifold/TB mod. I have no idea about using a 960 manifold. Most just use an 850 NA Manifold & 850 NA TB and just swap out the plate for the one on a 960. So if you bought the 960 TB. I would just take it back, get the 850 NA manifold, the 850NA TB, and cop a plate out of a 960. Hope that helps. I have a feeling you kinda get it now that you have a better understanding of the plate.

What the hell is going on in here? lol Cams? GLTs? off topic much? lol
-Only 97 GLTs were LPT, the rest were NA.
-You use an 850 NA manifold (to avoid porting out the turbo manifold), 850 NA throttle body, and a 960/s90 throttle body plate.
-93 cams were supposedly the biggest, but, I'm guessing your car is fairly stock and unless your doing extreme modifications, you won't know the difference between a 93 NA cam and a 94+ NA cam.
-You can't use a 960 manifold. 850 has five cylinders. I'll give you one guess how many cylinders a 960 has.
-What year 850 doesn't matter, just make sure it either has EGR or SAS for your car. You may also need to tap a vac line port in the manifold. Everyone says they need to do that, I did not only because I don't have SAS, EGR, cruise control, etc etc.
Does that cover all of the confusion??
I put on the throttle body last night and the response was amazing. I was breaking the tires loose easier than ever before, I didn't even have to try. It's a great mod.

Lol thats hilarious i would never be that stupid to think a 960 mani would fit a 5cyl....i dont know where that came from but anyways i was just wondering about the 94 and up n/a cams out of curiosity. I have a 960 throttle body assembly and was wondering if i should just get a n/a mani instead of tearing up my mani.

Also dont forget if you go the N/A TB way you need to get the upgraded TB IC hose, the stock one wont fit...
I dont know who else sells them but here is the one I ordered and never used.... YET
