Default Temperature issues!

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can help me.

I have a c30 2009 2.0l R-Design which has currently done 79K miles.

My issue is that the car keeps displaying a message that reads "engine system service required" after starting from cold, this stays on for about 5 minutes and then disappears again.

In the last few days I have noticed that when starting from cold the temperature gauge fluctuates and rises as if the engine was warm and kicks the fan in. The service message seems to appear whilst this is happening.
Sometimes it will quickly drop back to the correct temp and rise normally as the car warms up or other times it stays where it is until the car warms up.

Can anyone offer any advise?

No engine management light on or anything

Thanks,

Claire.

a bad engine coolant temp sensor can kick on the fan early and mess with the gauge. Also consider changing the thermostat should you go to replace the temp sensor.
