Exclamation Inner CV Boot replacement

Has anyone done a CV boot replacement...if so can you give instructions or post how to?

I've done it one time for my 01 C70 and I'll tell you that it's a total PITA. Here's a trick I saw when I was researching it, but I didn't have any luck with it:


It also depends on which type of boot you get. If you can find the 2 piece ones that you just glue together it would probably be a lot easier. When I did mine, the joint fell apart and I could see that the bearings and their paths were worn out somewhat, but I was already knee-deep in the project so I just finished it. Between getting grease everywhere while trying to hold the joint and ball bearings together as you drop it in at exactly the right angle it's just simply not worth it in my opinion. Plus after it was all back together, it sounds pretty nasty when I turn the wheel past a certain position.

the question is whether you want to remove the half shaft or not. If you don't want to remove the shaft, you can install a split boot - there are two types, one that glues together and a second that screws together. In a prior thread there was no consensus as to which is better. As noted, if you get grease where the glue goes, you risk a failed project. The other thing is you should evaluate how long the axle had a torn boot - is the joint dry? is there a lot of dirt in the joint already? A big part of the rebooting is getting new grease into the joint as well so its bit messy. The conservative route would be to just replace the shaft with a factory rebuilt unit and not worry about it for another 100K miles. Last time I did one on my 850T the axle cost me about $90 for a rebuilt unit.

Thanks guys it is appreciated. I ended up replacing the shaft with factory rebuilt. I figured I was half way there anyway.
