Had pretty good luck with it in the past with junkyard motors that were used for motor swaps where the owner didn't want to rebuild.
Really thins the oil out when you drain it.

Spoke too soon.
Check engine light is back on.... Will get the codes read down where she is, but I'd say it's going to be the same ones as before.
Volvo solenoid in y near future I'd say.

Mine would only activate the CEL for P0015 on start-up. Would usually take a day or 2 after reset to appear depending on the amount of driving.
The solenoid on my S40 was replaced with the VVT hub in 2013 by previous owner. Swapping the solenoid with an older used unit didn't resolve the issue. Now approaching 2 weeks with no CEL .

If the codes are the same, over advance over retard, I'll get the Volvo solenoid to match the Volvo VVT hub. Then it better be bloody right! LOL

Yup.
BTW, the one I linked to above sounds like a good one, looked brand new/cleaned/overhauled.....probably worth the $60 bucks.

Well just over $70 shipped....
The place I got this one from is warrantying it out for me, no problems.
I can either get the same brand to replace it, or pay an addition bit of coin and get a Volvo one to replace it.
Wishing I had kept the old one though.....

Yeah kinda hate that $10 for shipping but I thought you said they wanted an additional $40 for a Volvo one.

Looks like I am going to have to bite on the timing belt job, tomorrow it is going to be nice so I am changing LOF then.

You will get there, Martin. Almost done! I hope the different solenoid does the job for you. If not you may be stuck taking the belt off and putting it back on. I had these codes come on after my first TB attempt. My first TB replacement was because I had oil on the belt and I thought it was due to leaking seals. With this in mind I did not replace the vvt. A month later I got the 0015 code and decided that I would replace the vvt as a precaution the 2nd time around. However I am convinced that what allowed me to get rid of the code was to tension the belt properly between the intake cam (the one closer to the front of engine bay) and the crank before setting the tensioner. The volvo instructions are quite clear about doing this but I somehow missed it when I did the job the first time (or rather I pulled on the belt and decided it was "tight" already. The second time I actually took the breaker bar and turned the crank clockwise just a sliver which made things good and tight between crank and intake cam (since the cams are locked). I then adjusted the tensioner to 12 o'clock and then made sure that the crank was back where it should be before doing the final timing adjustment on the vvt gear. This may not be of any use to you but maybe it is. I can't remember if you have access to the VIDA instructions. If you do not let me know and I will email them your way. Just need you email address.

I checked the timing this past weekend, and everything was lined up perfectly mate. I turned the crank bolt by hand, clockwise, and all marks were dead on.
I'll give the new VVT solenoid a shot, and see if that sorts it out.
It's still running good, so at least that is in its favor!

Well, for some closure.
Got the new Volvo solenoid and my eldest kid put it on and cleared the codes.
No more CEL, so looks like the aftermarket actuator was indeed the problem. Moral of the story, use a Volvo part on the VVT stuff.....
