Default 2003 S40 flasher relay location

I only found a couple of posts. None for my generation. It sounds like the flasher (blinker) relay might be IN the hazard switch? Is this true (on a 2003)?

Could a symptom be slowing/stopping blinkers on both sides? That's my thought.

If so, recommendation for (best-priced] replacement part would be cool!

This forum and my dealership seemed under-informed about the existence and placement of a flasher relay. I thought I had searched correctly for it's existence -- coming up with nothing. As such, I'd come to the conclusion that the hazard switch actually contained that relay. That's because replacing it cured problems for the posts I'd found.

So, I ordered that switch from my dealer. When it came in (and cost $50), I pulled the old one and disassembled it. My hope, at the last minute, was to find a way to repair it -- and avoid the $50 fee (for my daughter's car. When I got it apart, I found zero electronics. It's merely a multi-pole switch.

In another search (about the hazard switch), we finally found reference to the flasher relay -- which plugs into the main fuse box under the dash. That part is currently on order and I expect it to solve the problem.

Note: I was able to use the new hazard switch (that I had on order) to test to make sure that didn't cure the problem.

Finally, the hazard flasher is $45ish. I have a strong feeling that the "standard" J945 flasher relay (found on earlier 240s) could be adapted. This S40 flasher relay has a piece of plastic that problem could be transferred...and probably costs $35 of the $45 cost.

Dealership, factory, and design-for-profit BS drives me nuts. I will let you know for sure if the relay worked. (This weekend)

For S40/V40: The turn signal and hazard relay switch is next to the interior fuse box (driver's side, under the dash on left). The hazard button is just a switch and it's not easy to remove and replace and you may damage dash stuff trying to get it out. Trust me, don't replace the hazard button if you don't have to.

So then, if your turn signals AND (operative word AND) hazards are not working or working intermittently, you should replace the flasher relay. To do so, the unit is located next the fuse box. If your car still has the upholstered panel above the pedals, it comes out with 2 easy clips that you pull down and pop out. Next to the fuse box to the left, the flasher unit in my V40 had a white housing that I think serves as a tool to help you insert a new flasher. The white housing can be pried off and kept for the new unit. You have to either wriggle with some effort, or use vise grips to pull the bad unit. I used vise grips lightly clamped to wriggle it out.

I'm on West Coast of U.S. and found the part at NAPA for $12. That part number is 111953227D. I was seeing prices for part No. MB953383 and 30870939 anywhere from $15 to $52!

I've read other posts where just taking out the relay and cleaning the contacts worked, but it didn't for me (they would work a few times and then fail again... and then work again and then not work again...) so you might as well just spend the $12 and get a new one that will last another 140,000 miles.

Flasher relay is here. I swapped mine out to use rear LED turn signals so they wouldn't hyper flash.

You swapped out the old flasher for an electronic one? The LEDs don't pull enough amps to make the old style flashers work.
