I know that your SIPS system has to be scanned every so often. My car has a sticker on the side of the last inspection. What year and model are we talking about?

yes. what you can do is remove the plug on the air bag and jump it with a paper clip or wire and the srs light will go out.

first of all..on that jumper wire you need about 2.5-2.9 ohms resistance, then will the airbag light reset on it's own ummm! when the airbag light is on usually the whole system is disabled. might want to go see a local volvo mecanic, because here in canada volvo de3alers seem only want to replace parts instead of inspecting the actual problem.

Confirming that when the airbag light is on, the whole system is disabled. For me, the light came on because an orange electrical cable under the passenger seat became disconnected. Cost $50. for an independent (non-dealer) shop to check and clear. Drove it for nearly two years and wouldn't recommend that.

If you decide to keep the functionality, it is possible to do this replacement on your own. The part from a place such as Tascaparts would be perhaps half that $900. It will have to be shipped as "hazardous material" with a $50 dollar surcharge, and you need to read and follow the steps to ensure that it doesn't go off. Basically roll down the windows and unhook the battery before touching the wiring.

I did a driver's side seat belt (also pyrotechnic) replace to get rid of a SRS warning. I believe you ~ may ~ still need to go in with VIDA to clear the fault flag.
