Dashboard bulb does not light sometimes
What light operates this section of the dashboard on a 2002 Volvo s40? That area under question is the right half of the tachometer and the left half of the speedometer on the car's dash.
The bulb there occasionally fails to light, but it usually comes back on. Then after awhile it fails to light again.
I figure that if I ever have to replace any other light on the dashboard I might as well replace this one. As long as I am in there.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

not sure about s40s but in the 850s the dash head has a set of bulbs that simply insert into the unit. Kind of a pain to open so as you noted most people replace them all given the opportunity. Looks like there are different sizes 1.4W, 2W and 3W in the S40 instrument cluster so you may need to ask around for which bulb does what...

I finally decided to replace the burnt out lamps in my instrument cluster 3 days ago on my 2000 s40. Not terribly difficult---and I didn't even need to disconnect the negative battery terminal. However, keep the key switch in the OFF position. Remove the 14 or 15mm hex head bolts (2) from the underside of the steering column. Drop the adjustable column downward. I lost my socket...so I removed the trim below (4) Philips screws---and disconnected the light. The top trim of the upper steering column prizes out with a slot screwdriver. Top of the cluster has 2 Philips screws--Remove them. There are 3 torx head screws holding the cluster to the dash. Remove them. The cluster can be eased out---tight fit, but do-able. Take it out. The back of the cluster has green, black, and several grey bayonet type lamps. You want to pull the black (3 amp) ones---they twist out. At the base are tiny copper tabs that you can gently prize up to better contact the printed circuit board (silver lines). Poor contact will make them not work or work intermittingly. You can find them on e-Bay or get stung by the Stealer---but doubt you will find them at the local Auto supply. My cluster had no connector cable---it press fits back into the housing. Make sure the LCD comes back to life before re-installation. I used a ohmmeter to test them, and put the dead one behind the tachometer. three days later it came back to life.
