Fast crank before start, solutions?

Are you worried about the fast crank or the time it takes to start after you turn the key?
The long cranking time problem has usually been a bad fuel pressure regulator. Verify by checking the fuel pressure after you shut off the engine. Pressure should stay near normal for many minutes and should never bleed off to zero. If the pressure immediately goes to zero when you shut off the engine you have a bad FPR.
Fast cranking? The 5 times I've heard an engine crank abnormally fast it was because of a broken timing belt. Of course the engine never started...

Yes, it was the FPR.
I happened to pull a used one out of an 04' and it fixed the problem. Instead of spending 100+ on the whole piece. Might be worth sharing, Im new and unsure where to post the information.
Instead of buying the whole thing. I'm sure there are places where 2004 FPR are sold just as a piece instead of everything. (I would not recommend pulling a used one, but I was getting other parts and it was 2.99 with the "S" hose attached)
I just pulled the pin out of the plastic housing, very carefully wiggled a flat head to looses the FPR enough to pull out. Repeated the process with my car, (2001 S40) wiggled it in slowly then put the clip back in, BAM! Worked like new… Starts the first time every time so far.

I'm glad it fixed your problem. I had the hard start issue for a few months and it was really aggravating. I felt like I had a new car once I fixed it!
As for buying just the FPR, and not the housing along with it... I found alot of websites selling the plastic housings along with it for my year S40. But on my 2003 S40 the housing and the fuel rail is all one peice. At some point Volvo must have made a change to the seperate FPR housings. Did the 2004 you pulled your FPR from have the 2 piece setup?
I did think about going to a junk yard for a cheap one, but it would be really hard to tell if that used FPR was good or not. You had good luck, and for 2.99 I don't blame you.
