Unhappy Installing Central Electronic Module (CEM) V40

Hi
First post ever! I have 2002 Volvo v40. High beams won't stay on and dealer says I need new CEM which is $850 for the part and $400 labor. I can get used CEM on Ebay for about $100.

A few questions:
1. Do I need a CEM from a 2002 V40 or can I use any of the models that Ebay says works?
2. Is it true I will not need to program it as long as I do not mind if the rear wiper will not work?
3. Is installation easy (i.e. can I do it)?
4. The dealer says the part number is 30638707 but all the listing on Ebay have different part numbers but say they will work. Is that true?
5. If I find one from a V40 will the rear wiper work without reprogramming?

Any help will be appreciated as I can not pass inspection and will be forced to throw this car out and walk everywhere if I can't get it to pass.

Thanks!

Look up VIDA on ebay motors. If you have a 32 bit Windows version (XP Pro or 7 Pro) you can get VIDA to work. This has the same info the dealer has including part numbers and diagrams. If you are really motivated get the DICE device to hook the car and your laptop together to accomplish all the dealer can accomplish via hardware/software.

Default Can I just plug an old ECM in?

Thanks- can I just plug and old ECM in and it will work minus the rear wipers or do I need to program it? I would prefer to not but the VIDA you suggest.

Thanks

Is this car new to you? How long have you owned it?

Please describe exactly what you mean by "high beams won't stay on." I may have a suggestion for you.

Default Car

I have owned this car for 7 years. When the light switch is in the 12 oclock position no headlights are on. When I pull back for the high beams they come on but will not stay on when released.

Regualr headlights lights stay on in the 9 oclock position.

The car will not pass inspection unless I can prove the high beams can stay on.

A new ECM should fix this- is there some other way to do this?

Thanks!

I'd suspect the rotary headlight switch. In the 12 o'clock position the headlights should be on when the engine is running (ignition key in position II). If the headlights are off when the switch is in the 12 o'clock position there may be a problem with the switch (or a relay or fuse). I'd investigate that possibility first before installing a new CEM.

The dealer may not have properly diagnosed the problem or they may be dishonest. Or they may be right.

Did you get this fixed? After many posts from others it seems the CEM is failing more and more as our cars age. There is a fix for this without replacing the CEM if you can desolder/solder small electronics.

Thanks for the clarification. You do realize that the average person will come to your dealership for the software update. They will pay the money and go on their way. No argument here. My goal is simply to give people more information so they can make a better decision. There are really very few people willing to go through all the procedures and costs associated with VIDA and a DICE device. I am one of them and will help anyone else who wishes to go this route.
