Default Just purchased a 2004 s40 for my son

Hello we bought a nice 78000 mile car for my son. It threw a belt on the ac side and the compressor locked up. It is a 5sp manual with 2.5
My dad has seen the car and even without the belt the car still has power steering how is this? Is it gear driven?
Does anyone know of a reputable place to buy a good ac compressor and accumulator online ?

What have s40 ownwers experienced or what should I expect ? This is our 3rd volvo I know them fairly well but we have never owned a s40.

It's electric power steering. The pump is located in the passenger side wheel well very close to where you will be working to replace the compressor.

Online there are many good parts houses:

Volvo specific: IPD, FCP Euro, Tasca Ford/Volvo, Swedish Auto Parts (and more)
Generic: Rock Auto, Parts Geek

The pump and reservoir are to the right of the compressor in this picture:

In this picture the fill cap can be seen behind the headlight and in front of the coolant reservoir. Things changed slightly in later years.

Thank you Houdini . I would have never thought that it was electric? I have yet to see the car my dad arranged a meeting with the previous owner . All I have to fix is the compressor accumulator and might as well put a Volvo timing belt on while where at it.

Are there any quirks with this car? I have a 08 s60 and a 91 244. I love volvos and hate them. Lol

More like electric assist since when you are running straight the pump is off. It only works when it's needed.

It's a much better design than the 2000-2004 1.9L models with much less problems. It still needs TLC though. One quirk is the crankcase ventilation system becoming clogged. You will get a whistling sound through the dipstick. There is an extended warranty on it.

Another is the compressor needing deshimming. When outside air temps are 90+ and the AC is working hardest, your compressor disengages and the system blows warm air. Once it cools down the compressor works fine again. The cause is too wide of a gap at the compressor clutch. The fix is to remove a shim (there are 3 of differing thicknesses) from the clutch which makes the gap smaller.

The waterfall radio has no AUX hookup or way to add one to early year cars. Also, if the CD changer craps out you are stuck replacing it with OEM. It's always possible to do custom work but nothing off the shelf in the aftermarket if yours is tied to the climate control.

Let see, the fuel pump pressure is regulated with varying the voltage. The fuel pressure sensor on the fuel rail can cause problems if it goes south.

And the car is very very sensitive to proper voltage. If your alternator goes out it is extremely expensive to buy the OEM unit. Aftermarket ones have been the source of continuing headaches as people starting looking elsewhere for the problem because they had just replaced the alternator when it turned out the problem WAS the aftermarket alternator.
